The CME Group has adjusted margin requirements for gold and silver futures to percentages of notional value—5% for gold and 9% for silver—which increases costs for short positions as prices rise. Such changes are reportedly unusual outside of stressed market conditions and raise collateral demands on leveraged traders, potentially contributing to increased volatility through forced position covering. Mainstream sources suggest the adjustment stems from a routine review of market volatility rather than an indication of imminent crisis.

President Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on goods from any country conducting business with Iran, effective immediately, targeting major partners such as China, Iran’s largest oil buyer. The measure is intended to pressure Tehran amid protests that have reportedly led to over 500 deaths and 10,000 arrests. Trump has expressed support for the demonstrators, indicated consideration of military options, and opened channels for talks. The tariff may affect U.S. trade relations, including a recent truce with China, and could face legal review by the Supreme Court. China has vowed to take necessary measures in response, potentially raising tariffs on U.S. goods and disrupting the recent trade truce.

Tether has frozen more than $182 million in USDT across five Tron blockchain addresses, following a law enforcement request related to an ongoing investigation. The frozen balances range from $12 million to $50 million. The action aligns with Tether’s policy of complying with U.S. Treasury sanctions and supporting global law enforcement agencies, which have resulted in blocking more than $3 billion in assets since 2023 across over 310 jurisdictions. Stablecoins like USDT, which hold 64% of the $292 billion market, reportedly facilitated 84% of $154 billion in illicit cryptocurrency transactions last year. The freeze, coordinated with the Department of Justice and FBI, has reignited debates over stablecoin centralization and potential risks to user privacy in such enforcement actions.

Energy

President Trump has mandated that tech companies self-fund power requirements for new AI data centers to prevent increases in Americans’ electricity bills, with Microsoft set to implement changes this week. The policy requires firms to cover their consumption amid the U.S. AI boom, with additional announcements expected. Supporters applaud the effort to protect average Americans from rising electricity bills, and critics have raised concerns about the feasibility of self-funding and potential delays in AI infrastructure development.

Relatedly, Nano Nuclear has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ameresco to explore deploying its Kronos, Zeus, and Loki small modular reactor designs on federal and commercial sites, including coordination on funding incentives. This follows its University of Illinois R&D project for a 15 MW high-temperature gas-cooled reactor. Likewise, a NuScale study with Oak Ridge National Laboratory indicates economic viability for using its 77 MWe modules to supply heat and power to chemical facilities, alongside pursuits in desalination and a potential 6 GW deal with the Tennessee Valley Authority, supported by Japan-U.S. agreements. Ameresco is considering deployments after 2027. Analysts have noted ongoing challenges in commercialization, regulatory approvals, and funding timelines for such projects.

Geopolitics

U.S. embassies in Colombia and Venezuela have warned Americans to leave Venezuela immediately due to armed militias called “colectivos” establishing roadblocks and targeting U.S. citizens amid unrest following Nicolas Maduro’s reported arrest on January 3. Risks include wrongful detention, torture, kidnapping, and service outages, with the Trump administration stating it cannot guarantee safety. Venezuelan officials have attributed the roadblocks to general civil unrest rather than organized targeting of Americans.

In Argentina’s Patagonia region, a fire victim has accused Israel and Jewish individuals of deliberately starting wildfires to acquire land, citing an influx of Israelis purchasing property there. The resident described the destruction of what locals call “paradise,” expressing distress over lost homes, animals, and livelihoods, while alleging government inaction that has left affected communities isolated. Some reports have linked wildfires near Lake Epuyén (often referred to as Lake Puyehue in reports) to an Israeli-manufactured M26 IM grenade, although these claims have not been substantiated or verified, and a leading Argentine fact-checker says the grenade was actually an Argentine-made FMK2 model. The fires, possibly accelerated by fuel, reportedly trapped communities and endangered lives, prompting the National Security Minister to pledge pursuit of those responsible. However, authorities and Jewish leaders have dismissed such claims as baseless antisemitic conspiracy theories, with investigations primarily attributing the fires to natural causes and isolated incidents exacerbated by dry conditions, rather than confirmed organized foreign involvement.

Lastly, the United States is urging G7 nations to expedite efforts to diversify rare earth supplies away from China, according to a senior U.S. official, amid concerns over Beijing’s dominance in global production. The official highlighted involvement from countries including Australia, India, South Korea, and Mexico, which account for up to 60% of worldwide demand. China controls the majority of production, with Western electrification initiatives relying heavily on these minerals amid escalating tensions, including export restrictions reportedly imposed by Beijing. Japan has reportedly reduced its dependence on Chinese supplies from 90% to 60% since 2010 through investments in overseas production and recycling. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent led discussions at a G7 meeting in Washington on January 12-13 focused on minimum price mechanisms and new supply partnerships, though analysts note that rebuilding supply chains could take years despite the urgency.

US Politics

Violence has escalated at anti-ICE protests in Minnesota, with clashes outside facilities involving thrown objects, flashbangs, and tear gas following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good. ICE has reported arrests of individuals with long deportation orders, including those convicted of rape, child assault, and homicide from countries such as Laos, Mexico, Somalia, and El Salvador. Incidents involving U.S. citizens, including Jose Roberto Ramirez who was detained despite presenting ID and another threatened for filming, have raised questions about enforcement tactics. Officials have stated that deporting violent offenders aligns with public support but encouraged non-violent protests and accountability for any obstructions, without labeling demonstrators as terrorists absent evidence. ICE has emphasized that the operations specifically target individuals with longstanding deportation orders for serious crimes, amid calls for independent investigations into the shooting and related incidents.

Relatedly, Minnesota has sued the Trump administration to halt ICE’s “Operation Metro Surge,” alleging warrantless arrests, excessive force, and retaliation that violate state and federal rights, and seeking an immediate injunction. The lawsuit follows the fatal shooting of Good, which has drawn criticism from Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. The Department of Homeland Security has accused Democrats of hypocrisy regarding federal enforcement, while legal experts assess that the broad request to block ICE operations is unlikely to succeed given immigration’s federal jurisdiction, though individuals may seek specific remedies. DHS has dismissed the lawsuit as an attempt to obstruct federal immigration duties under the Supremacy Clause.

European Politics

Leaked documents indicate that senior EU official Marton Benedek proposed in 2019 creating a coordination forum to organize resistance against Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, building on protests against labor laws that critics dubbed the “slave law.” The plan aimed to unite political, union, and civic groups, with potential funding from entities including George Soros’ Open Society Foundations, for collective actions ahead of elections and long-term policy development. Benedek, who co-founded an opposition party, has reported ties to anti-Orban activism. Meanwhile, Peter Magyar’s Tisza party has gained support, receiving 30% in the 2024 European elections and leading current polls, which could align Hungary more closely with EU integration and potentially unfreeze withheld funds through reforms. EU sources have cited procedural caution in handling Hungarian funding amid rule-of-law disputes, while critics of Orban point to concerns over media control and democratic backsliding under his 16-year rule.

In France, Marine Le Pen continues her fight to be allowed to run for President. She is scheduled for a pivotal appeal in Paris this week against a conviction for misusing €4 million in EU funds to pay National Rally staff, resulting in a four-year prison sentence (partly suspended), a €100,000 fine, and a five-year ban from public office that could prevent her from running in the 2027 presidential race. The trial, extending through February with a ruling expected by summer, involves co-defendants and claims of damages to the European Parliament. Failure of the appeal could lead to 30-year-old Jordan Bardella running in her place. Le Pen has claimed the conviction represents political targeting, while U.S. figures including Trump have voiced support and denied reports of sanctions against French officials. The National Rally remains France’s largest opposition party. Supporters have decried the conviction as a threat to democracy, while the European Parliament’s representatives seek to uphold it and recover the misused funds.

Apple has selected Google’s Gemini AI to power Siri and other features following a competitive review, enabling new user experiences. The partnership was confirmed in a statement, positioning Gemini as the foundation for Apple’s AI roadmap. Apple shares rose 1% following the announcement. The multi-year deal has prompted concerns about Apple’s growing reliance on external AI providers and potential antitrust scrutiny.

One thing that humans tend to ignore either willfully or out of ignorance, is that we live on a “finite planet”. We are pushing the planet to war as we try to squeeze out competitors from access to needed resources. In this case it is energy and needed rare earth materials that powers modern civilization.

We, who don’t live in a bubble knew that Venezuela was going to be trouble for those (Neocons and Warhawks) that think linearly and never bother to consider or ask, “what if or now what”?

Trump is out of control. He is sleepwalking into a potential hotwar. He is once again, threatening Iran because the CIA/Mossad lead coup in Iran backfired when the Russians gave Iran Starlink, jamming devices.

This is all about regime change in Iran at the behest of Israel. Trump is quickly becoming the patient in Room 1.

Just a routine review. A long, long time ago, when I was a LOT younger back in December, apparently there were no routine reviews and silver was around 60 because a month earlier in November, when I was just a tiny tyke, silver was around 50. I’m all for routine reviews.

So, parts for US missiles and advanced aircraft parts and 80 percent of prescription medicine will cost the American tax payer 25% more. Take THAT you slant eyes! BOOM!

If there was only a form of real money that was immune from that along with no second, third, or fourth party risk.

Sure glad there was never a need for this kind of energy for silly things like pesky citizens who live in places that need energy, like… everywhere because nukes are dangerous. deadly and boo on SMR’s.

Well, why? The Acting President of Venezuela Trump has made Venezuela great again. Besides, only one major US oil company called Venezuela “uninvestable.” As a bonus, Acting President of Venezuela Trump may qualify for the Nobel Peace Prize since Venezuela hasn’t started a single war since he became its acting president.
