US Politics

The Department of Homeland Security has designated Charlie Kirk’s memorial at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, as a Level 1 Special Event, comparable to Super Bowl security protocols, with President Trump expected to attend. Glendale Police are coordinating with state and federal forces, deploying SWAT teams, drones, and officers to manage attendees and potential protesters. Tributes include a multi-story banner outside Heritage in Arizona displaying Kirk’s quote on family and legacy, and a Steak ‘N Shake-sponsored billboard in Rome, Georgia, with a message encouraging boldness. Critics, including The Young Turks, have questioned the DHS designation, arguing it elevates a partisan event unnecessarily.

Separately, the suspect in the 2022 assassination attempt on Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh has identified as transgender in court filings, using the name “Sophia,” adding a new element to the case. Advocacy groups like The Advocate have cautioned against politicizing the suspect’s gender identity, emphasizing the focus should remain on the act of political violence. However, many on the right have pointed out the disproportionate representation of transgenders in acts of violence. Meanwhile, data indicates a 1,260% increase in non-binary identities among Gen Z over the past decade, with nearly 1 in 4 identifying as LGBTQ+, reflecting demographic trends reported in recent surveys. GLAAD has indicated that this rise reflects safer environments for self-expression rather than an actual change in LGBTQ+ rates.

Additionally, Associate Deputy Attorney General Ed Martin visited Tina Peters in a Colorado prison regarding her election integrity case and initiated a grand jury probe into 148,000 sealed 2020 ballots in Fulton County, Georgia, amid ongoing political discussions.

Health

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has recommended against using the MMRV combo vaccine for children under 4 due to an increased risk of febrile seizures, favoring separate MMR and varicella shots instead, a decision based on medical data. A vote on delaying the hepatitis B vaccine from birth to at least 1 month of age was postponed, with discussions focusing on safety data and the benefits of early vaccination, according to committee statements. The American Academy of Pediatrics has expressed concern that the MMRV recommendation could lower vaccination rates.

Economy

Data shows Gen Z experiencing the largest FICO score decline since the financial crisis, with an average score of 676, linked to high credit utilization and delinquency rates, including a 3.1% student loan delinquency rate, per credit bureau statistics. CNBC notes that rising interest rates and inflation may also contribute to this trend across all age groups, according to their recent report. Meanwhile, House Republicans have proposed the Price Stability Act of 2025 to refocus the Federal Reserve solely on inflation, eliminating its dual mandate with employment, amid discussions on Fed reform and reported low public trust in its economic oversight. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has defended the dual mandate, emphasizing its role in balancing economic challenges.

Financial challenges are evident across various sectors. First Brands Group, an auto-parts supplier, has seen the value of its $6 billion debt drop significantly in days due to reported concerns over off-balance-sheet financing, though the company has not issued a public response. Some analysts, as reported by the Financial Times, suggest the market reaction may be overly pessimistic, citing the company’s strong fundamentals, per their recent coverage. Tricolor Holdings’ bankruptcy has led to disputes over assets, with creditors such as Triumph Financial and Clear Haven Capital competing for collateral amid allegations of fraud involving potentially duplicated loan pledges, according to financial reports. Reuters has reported that some analysts believe the fraud allegations may be overstated, pointing to broader market conditions as a factor, as per their recent article.

Energy

California is adjusting its climate policies to address concerns over potential oil industry departures, fueled by fears of fuel shortages and gas prices averaging $4.66 per gallon. Governor Gavin Newsom’s office has held discussions with Chevron on a bill that would permit 2,000 annual drilling permits in Kern County and delay a cap on refiners’ profits until 2030. Industry leaders have reportedly stated that further regulatory relief is necessary, while experts have cautioned about supply risks during market disruptions, according to energy sector analyses. Environmental groups like Greenpeace USA have criticized the move, arguing it undermines California’s climate goals.

Globally, the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin, China, highlighted shifts in energy geopolitics. A binding memorandum for the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, expected to supply 50 billion cubic meters of Russian gas to China annually, was signed, reflecting a reorientation from Europe to Asia amid Western sanctions. India, meanwhile, continues to strengthen energy ties with Russia and China despite US tariffs on Russian oil imports, as reported by international news sources. Bloomberg has noted potential economic risks for Russia in this pivot, citing lower prices and volumes in sales to China.

Technology

Albania’s newly introduced AI Minister, Diella, developed by Microsoft, has sparked debate following its parliamentary debut via video speech. Intended to assist rather than replace humans, the initiative by Prime Minister Edi Rama has faced criticism. Social media posts reflect public frustration over economic and social issues, with some users reportedly viewing the AI as a distraction from governance challenges. Opposition MPs walked out after 25 minutes, with some allegedly describing the AI as a “virtual facade” concealing government corruption, according to local reports. However, Prime Minister Rama has defended the appointment on social media, calling it a step toward modernization and urging the public to give Diella a chance.

Meanwhile, in the US, Samsung has released a software update for its Family Hub refrigerators, introducing advertisements on idle screens as part of what the company calls a pilot program to “strengthen value.” The ads can be temporarily dismissed, though the move follows earlier company statements denying such plans, as reported by tech outlets. Consumer Reports has raised concerns over potential privacy implications of this feature, urging users to review updated terms.

I’m still amazed how people allow themselves to become slaves to technology. There’s an app for everything. Hey, can’t get to sleep because all you do all day is stare at a screen, wear Bluetooth devices? No worries, buy our watch and it’ll tell you if you are sleep deprived.

How did we get to the point that we have devolved into “Stupid”? So we had a couple of years ago a situation where Amazon’s Alexa assistant would listen in on conversations and randomly start laughing, which needless to say freaked some people out.

Now we are buying refrigerators and appliances with internet access and screens. So what does any corporation do that realizes you are a technology slave? They feed you Ads on the screen. And here I thought I was old-fashion with my refrigerator that has no screen and internet access.

I’m waiting for the toilet and app that asks you if you used the potty today? If not it will instruct you to drop your pants and have a seat on the throne. We have lost all commonsense. I stopped watching TV about 25 years ago when the morning shows would encourage you to stay hydrated. Thanks, i’ll keep that in mind the next time i’m coughing up dust.
