D.C. Police Federalized, Ukrainians Wants Negotiated Peace, A.I. Leads to Arrest of 13-Year-Old Over a Joke

US Politics

President Trump has invoked the D.C. Home Rule Act to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department and deploy the National Guard in Washington, D.C., in an effort to address crime. The D.C. Police Union has expressed support for the decision, citing staffing shortages and rising crime rates, which they attribute to legislative restrictions since 2020. However, some critics, including civil liberties advocates, have raised concerns that the move could undermine personal freedoms and have drawn comparisons to historical examples of militarization, such as Rome’s Praetorian Guard. Additionally, questions have been raised by some observers about D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith’s qualifications, particularly regarding her previous role as a diversity officer. Opposition from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has also emerged, with her stating on social media that this federalization undermines local autonomy and calling for solutions that respect local governance.

In other developments, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has faced criticism from CIA insiders over her decision to release a House Intelligence Committee report questioning the 2016 Russian interference narrative. According to reports, her push for transparency has led to leaks and accusations from within the intelligence community that she may have compromised “sources and methods.” Separately, a whistleblower has alleged that Senator Adam Schiff approved the leaking of classified information to target Trump during the Russiagate investigation. FBI memos reportedly contain claims of unethical conduct, though prosecution is considered unlikely due to congressional immunity. Schiff has denied these allegations on social media, calling them baseless and politically motivated, while some mainstream outlets suggest the claims lack substantial evidence and may be part of a partisan narrative.

Geopolitics

Public opinion in Ukraine has shifted, with a Gallup poll showing 69% of respondents favoring a negotiated peace over continued fighting in the ongoing conflict with Russia. This contrasts with President Zelensky’s stated opposition to territorial concessions. Ahead of the Alaska summit, divisions within NATO have surfaced, with Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk and EU officials rejecting Russian demands for Ukrainian territory, while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has suggested openness to pragmatic discussions regarding Russian-controlled areas. President Trump described the upcoming summit with Putin as a “feel-out meeting,” expressing hope for a ceasefire while noting past challenges in dialogue with Moscow. European leaders, as reported by mainstream outlets, have expressed cautious optimism but also concern that any deal might sideline Ukraine’s interests, highlighting ongoing tensions within the alliance.

President Trump has publicly urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to consider territorial concessions in a proposed peace plan ahead of a summit with Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Vice President JD Vance has reiterated the administration’s opposition to additional U.S. funding for Kyiv. Zelensky has countered on social media, insisting that Ukraine’s territorial integrity is non-negotiable and that peace must be just, reflecting a stark divide between the two leaders’ positions.

Economy

In response to concerns over data accuracy, President Trump has nominated E.J. Antoni, who has previously criticized the Bureau of Labor Statistics, to lead the agency following recent controversy over revisions to jobs reports. While Antoni has expressed commitment to transparency in economic data, critics, including former BLS head Erika McEntarfer, have raised concerns about potential politicization of the agency under his leadership.

Meanwhile, a recent survey indicates that 86% of Americans are experiencing stress due to rising grocery costs. Consumers have also reported concerns over “shrinkflation,” where product sizes decrease while prices remain the same, and are preparing for potential further increases, such as tariffs on Brazilian coffee imports. Meanwhile, the share of young adults living with their parents has reached levels not seen since the Great Depression, according to economic data, despite reported GDP growth.

Also, the Oil/S&P 500 ratio has reached historic lows, a trend previously observed in 1999 and 2020, according to market data. Analysts note that this could reflect broader market dynamics or an undervaluation of oil relative to equities, prompting interest among investors monitoring long-term economic patterns. However, some financial outlets caution that current market conditions differ from past trends, urging investors to consider broader economic indicators before acting on this ratio.

Technology

In Tennessee, a 13-year-old student was arrested and subjected to house arrest, psychological evaluation, and solitary confinement after an AI surveillance program, Gaggle, flagged a joke as a potential threat. Reports indicate that nearly 70% of Gaggle’s alerts are false positives, raising concerns among some educators and parents about the balance between safety and overreach in school surveillance systems. Gaggle has acknowledged the incident on social media, stating they are working to reduce false positives, though some school officials defend the technology as essential for preventing potential threats.

Here’s a deeper link on the “Teen Punished Over AI Misunderstanding of Harmless Joke” article – the above link is to the Babylon Bee’s re-telling, here’s to the AP article linked from there: https://apnews.com/article/ai-school-surveillance-gaggle-goguardian-bark-8c531cde8f9aee0b1ef06cfce109724a
Main quote from that article, including the joke:

Lesley Mathis knows what her daughter said was wrong. But she never expected the 13-year-old girl would get arrested for it.

The teenage girl made an offensive joke while chatting online with her classmates, triggering the school’s surveillance software.

Before the morning was even over, the Tennessee eighth grader was under arrest. She was interrogated, strip-searched and spent the night in a jail cell, her mother says.

Earlier in the day, her friends had teased the teen about her tanned complexion and called her “Mexican,” even though she’s not. When a friend asked what she was planning for Thursday, she wrote: “on Thursday we kill all the Mexico’s.”

Mathis said the comments were “wrong” and “stupid,” but context showed they were not a threat.

“It made me feel like, is this the America we live in?” Mathis said of her daughter’s arrest. “And it was this stupid, stupid technology that is just going through picking up random words and not looking at context.”

That’s pretty horrifying, top to bottom. I hope the Mathis family can find a good junkyard lawyer, because it’s going to take a lot of money (parental time off from work, possibly counseling, likely another school) to begin undoing the damage caused by this school’s morons.

I am glad Trump federalized DC national guard. The dems have turned DC into a real shit hole. Their soft of crime policy has led to more crime. Its our capital city and its a cess pit (beyond the normal political cess pit). I am sick of rampant crime in this country while the offenders get coddled. I am sick of strung out druggies and homeless shitting in the streets of our cities. I am sick of illegals ruining our society. This needs to all stop NOW. Harsh penalties for law breakers. High cash bail so violent criminals stay in prison until trial. Punish people who use guns in crimes, not responsible gun owners. Open up more state run mental hospitals so people can get in patient treatment. People who need serious in patient treatment are sent out to live on the streets right now because there are not enough beds at mental hospitals.

The problem is some people don’t want the maddness and chaos to end because they profit off it and use it to stay in power.

I’m going to disagree. Too many mass shooters have made comments like that and have been ignored. Now, the extent they put the child through was over the top, when threats like this are made, they need to be taken seriously.

If every boomer who said “I’m going to kill you” as a youth was incarcerated, there wouldn’t be a single boomer-at-large. The vast, vast, majority of us never either killed anyone, nor thought seriously about doing so.

No, the AI flag should have been reviewed by a HUMAN who understands context. If the human thought there was a potential issue then they should have isolated the child from other students and called the parents. THEN interviewed the child with the parent and potentially an attorney present. That is how it is supposed to work.

I will be surprised if after the Friday summit in Alaska peace becomes a reality. Why? Those advising Trump are Neocons and Warhawks. Keith Kellogg and several others.

Then you have the EU and the UK who wants war to distract from their crumbling economies. There’s also Mr Zelensky the penis playing piano man who knows he’s a dead man when peace is achieved. It is why Zelensky has said no to territorial concessions with Russia. Zelensky has said the territory captured by the Russians belongs to Ukraine.

Maybe there will be a breakthrough or a lull in hostilities but we shall see. Another thing is, the Russians have been duped twice with peace agreements. Can they trust the US after the Iranians thought they had an agreement with the US only to be bombed by them shortly thereafter?

Red Herring much?

Is it ?

Because you made the (implicit) argument that when something is said (“on Thursday we kill all the Mexico’s”), it should be taken literally, and therefore, acted upon.

Bingo. From the Babylon Bee:

Rather than doing their due diligence and digging into the context, the school’s personnel immediately alerted police, who promptly arrested the bewildered girl, drove her to the police station, strip searched her, forced her to shower on camera, coerced her into signing documents she didn’t understand without a lawyer, and threw her into solitary confinement for 24 hours.

Her parents didn’t even know where she was, and when they finally found out what happened, they were not allowed any contact until after the solitary confinement was completed.

Absolutely criminal. I hope this girl isn’t scarred for life by this episode. Again, I hope her parents find a good and mean junkyard lawyer to tear into the abusers who did this, so that they can never do it again to other children. These people need to be put on a child abuse watch list.

Hmm, don’t remember the media or mainstream political pundits having any issues when the Dems militarised Washington DC by turning the area around the government buildings into an armed camp with fences and multiple national guard regiments, for a good six months after the Biden inauguration.

I went to a school board meeting last week where the district was concerned over new legislation that now makes it a felony offense to create AI deep fakes intended to “embarrass” another person. The law was supposedly intended to prevent putting people’s likeness on pornographic material, but their choosing the word “embarrass” leaves the law open to all kinds of subjective interpretation. The school was of course worried about children being needlessly punished or even imprisoned, but the implications are even larger. Context matters, and we’re only a hop-skip-and-a-jump away from UK-style locking people up for digital content that’s “offensive” according to government employees.

I hope you told them that their attempt at legislating AI use is embarrassing, and in itself, should be viewed as a punishable offense.

which of course is the whole point.

The UK has been doing this for years now
new laws brought in under the pretense of ‘protecting’ the public but with vague language which the government (and its establishment judges) can interepret in almost any way that they want.

Of course, when you speak out against the new legislation then you are accused of trying to hide something or being uncaring about the ‘danger’ they are purportedly keeping you safe from.

I think it was just before the first ‘hate speech’ laws came along that I noticed a sudden, massive surge of stories in the UK media about the evils of online trolling and how it was ruining people’s lives. I thought that was pretty strange but sure enough, a week or two later the UK government announce new laws designed to ‘protect’ the public from being trolled. In fact, they were designed to allow the government to ban and persecute any opinions that they didn’t like.
