Economy
The Bank of Japan is expected to raise its key rate by 25 basis points to 1.0 percent at its June 15-16 meeting, with markets pricing a 93 percent probability. That would mark the highest Japanese rate since 1995. The BOJ is also considering pausing its bond purchase reduction program from April 2027. The 10-year JGB yield has risen above the Topix dividend yield for the first time since the 2008 financial crisis. Some commentary has framed the yield crossover as a positive, gradual move toward a healthier economic environment.
In the real economy, the Department of Transportation reported that US airlinesâ fuel costs rose 78 percent in April amid the Iran conflict, totaling $6.5 billion, coinciding with a 20.7 percent year-over-year increase in airline fares in the April CPI. Globally, airlines face an estimated $100 billion in additional fuel costs for 2026 tied to the conflict.
Additionally, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby stated that roughly 900 aircraft sit grounded worldwide because carriers cannot secure engines or parts, and the shortage will persist for many years. The bottleneck stems from pandemic-era supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and quality control problems, including Pratt and Whitneyâs powder metal contamination issue affecting its geared turbofan engine and CFM Internationalâs production shortfalls for the 737 MAX and A320neo. Combined with Boeingâs production issues, airlines have delayed growth plans, retired fewer older jets, and retained less fuel-efficient aircraft. However, GE Aerospace reported a 60 percent rise in LEAP engine deliveries in the first quarter of 2026.
Meanwhile, total US bankruptcy filings rose 7 percent year-over-year in May, with individual filings up 8 percent and small business filings up 36 percent, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute. Epiq AACERâs Michael Hunter cited elevated interest rates, persistent inflation, and higher operating costs. Inflation rose from 2.4 percent in February to 3.8 percent in April, while the Fedâs benchmark rate stood at 3.5 to 3.75 percent. Commercial Chapter 11 filings fell 7 percent in May. S&P Global noted that the trajectory could worsen given fuel pressures from the Middle East.
Environment
Forecasters put the probability of El Niño conditions arriving by July at over 80 percent, with equatorial Pacific temperatures projected at 3°C above average. A marine heatwave has developed in the North Pacific. The World Meteorological Organization projects severe drought across southern Africa, Australia, India, the Indochina Peninsula, and Oceania, with the US Midwest potentially running 3 to 6 degrees above normal. Analysts project price shocks of 10 to 50 percent on wheat, rice, maize, and soybeans, and 50 to 100 percent on rice, palm oil, sugar, and coffee. Historical parallels reportedly resulted in famine, although modern agricultural technology and aid systems are expected to result in far lower mortality than in historical events.
US Politics
A House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform report states that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison knew about systemic fraud in state social services as early as 2019 but did not act. Furthermore, staff were reportedly warned that raising fraud concerns would result in their being labeled as racists. The report centers on the Feeding Our Future scandal, which has produced more than 60 fraud convictions and placed at least $300 million in federal child nutrition funds and roughly $9 billion in Medicaid at risk. Chairman James Comer described it as one of the most significant oversight failures the committee has examined. Walzâs office has dismissed the report as a political stunt.
In other news, Rep. Thomas Massie marked the 59th anniversary of Israelâs 1967 attack on the USS Liberty, which killed 34 American sailors and wounded 171. In a public speech to Congress, Massie disputed the official explanation of mistaken identity and called for a formal investigation. Opposing accounts maintain that the attack was an error during the fog of war.
Artificial Intelligence
Last Friday, the S&P 500 fell 2.6 percent. However, the same index excluding AI stocks was effectively flat, suggesting the entire selloff was limited to AI. Since February 27, the S&P 500 is up 7.34 percent, while the index without AI stocks is essentially unchanged. The Nasdaq fell 4.7 percent, the SOX semiconductor index dropped 10 percent, and memory stocks fell 11 percent. However, some analysts attributed the selloff primarily to stronger-than-expected jobs data and rising yields.
OpenAI is preparing changes to ChatGPT ahead of a planned IPO targeting valuations between $730 billion and $1 trillion. One senior employee told the Financial Times that the current chat interface is being replaced. With ChatGPT operating at a loss, the company is redesigning the interface to direct users toward Codex, image tools, AI agents, and partner apps. Codex weekly active users have grown sixfold to over five million since February. SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI have filed for IPOs within weeks of each other. Critics have noted risks that the superapp approach may feel tacked on and have questioned the high valuation amid ongoing losses.
British Politics
New information in the murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, stabbed by Vickrum Digwa in Southampton, has highlighted multiple reported police failures. Neighbors had reported Digwa firing an illegal air pistol in October 2022, but Hampshire Police took no action. Digwa had been banned from his local Gurdwara. On the night of the killing, his family told emergency services there were no knives involved. Three days later, police drafted a statement portraying Nowak as an aggressor, which was later retracted. Former Met Police Federation chairman Rick Prior attributed the failures to ideological capture and DEI policies within British policing.
Privacy & Surveillance
House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan has written to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, warning that Britainâs technical capability notices under the Investigatory Powers Act may affect US citizensâ data. The dispute follows Britainâs earlier order to Apple to weaken Advanced Data Protection encryption on iCloud.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has directed Apple, Google, and others to implement device-level controls within three months to prevent children from sharing or viewing nude images, which are switched on by default. Critics describe the measure as client-side scanning. Adults wishing to opt out must verify their age with the state. The EUâs similar proposal was rejected by the European Parliament in March. Supporters emphasize the urgency of tackling online child exploitation.
