Energy & Geopolitics

U.S. forces, with enabling support from the United Kingdom including surveillance and logistical assistance, seized the Russia-flagged oil tanker Marinera (formerly known as Bella 1) in the North Atlantic northwest of Scotland. The operation followed a weeks-long pursuit that began near Venezuelan waters, where the vessel evaded an initial boarding attempt, switched to a temporary Russian flag permit issued on December 24, repainted its hull, and changed its name in an apparent effort to avoid capture. Reports indicated Russian naval assets, including a submarine, were in the vicinity during the chase but did not intervene.

The seizure stemmed from a U.S. federal court warrant for alleged sanctions violations involving the transport of Venezuelan oil, with the vessel linked to a Russian-Iranian shadow network and an entity reportedly affiliated with Hezbollah. The U.K. Defence Ministry described the tanker as involved in illegal activities fueling terrorism and sanctions evasion.

In a related operation, the Pentagon announced the seizure of another tanker, M/T Sophia, in the Caribbean for similar illicit activities tied to sanctioned Venezuelan oil shipments.

Russia strongly condemned both seizures as violations of international maritime law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, accusing the U.S. of piracy, demanding the immediate release of the vessels and their crews (including 23 on the Marinera), and asserting the Marinera’s legal Russian registration.

The actions reflect intensified U.S. enforcement against Venezuelan oil exports, coinciding with a rally in tanker stocks—Teekay Tankers and Frontline rose more than 7%—amid expectations of higher freight rates and risks from disrupted shadow fleet operations.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump announced plans to increase the U.S. military budget by 50% from $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion for 2027, attributing the proposed expansion to revenue from tariffs on other countries and stating the need for a stronger force to address global threats and ensure national security. The proposal requires congressional approval and has faced skepticism regarding the feasibility of tariff revenues covering the increase.

Relatedly, military spending in Asia reportedly increased over the past five years amid escalating tensions, according to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) data. China led with a more than 20% rise to approximately $320 billion in 2024, followed by India’s 8% growth to $84 billion, Saudi Arabia’s 13% to $79 billion, Japan’s over 40% to $58 billion, South Korea’s 4% to $48 billion, and Taiwan’s 37% increase, with focuses on modernization, border disputes, and asymmetric defenses. Analysts noted the rises contribute to regional deterrence but have raised concerns about fueling an arms race.

US Politics

In Minneapolis, the Trump administration carried out what it described as its largest immigration enforcement operation in the city’s history, deploying federal agents to target alleged fraud and illegal hiring, particularly among Somali residents, resulting in more than 1,000 arrests, including individuals wanted for crimes such as murder in Ecuador and homicide in Laos. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem participated and noted resistance from Minnesota authorities in providing detention access.

The operations coincided with a fatal shooting in which an ICE agent fired at a woman whom the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) described as a violent rioter who accelerated an SUV toward officers, blocking their path during deportations targeting criminal immigrants. Video footage reportedly showed the vehicle striking an agent before shots were fired, leading to her death. President Trump described the agent’s actions as self-defense and blamed what he called radical left rhetoric for inciting assaults on federal officers. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz activated the state’s Emergency Operations Center, prepared the National Guard for potential unrest, and urged calm amid activist mobilizations reminiscent of George Floyd protests. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the incident, calling ICE’s justification unfounded and demanding the agency leave the city, stating its presence sowed chaos and distrust. Local Democrats, including Senator Tina Smith and Representative Ilhan Omar, identified the woman as a legal observer. Local officials disputed the federal account, citing video evidence and calling for a state investigation into the shooting.

In a separate action, the Trump administration withdrew the United States from 66 international organizations, treaties, and conventions, including 31 UN-related entities such as the Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the UN Entity for Gender Equality, citing redundancy, mismanagement, waste, and threats to sovereignty. Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted concerns including progressive ideologies and constraints on U.S. interests, following a February 2025 executive order review. Critics expressed concerns that the withdrawals could undermine U.S. engagement in global cooperation on issues like climate and human rights. A list of the organizations can be found below:

Blackstone stock fell as much as 9% following Trump’s announcement of immediate steps to ban institutional purchases of single-family homes, which officials described as aimed at addressing market impacts from large-scale investor activity. The policy may face legal challenges from investors, according to reports.

In cryptocurrency developments, Tether introduced “Scudo” as a unit representing one-thousandth of a troy ounce of gold, equivalent to its XAUT token, reportedly to facilitate everyday payments and support gold’s role as a medium of exchange amid inflation concerns and central bank demand. Tether, which holds nearly $17 billion in gold including 116 tonnes backing various assets, noted Scudo’s similarity to Bitcoin’s satoshi and emphasized secure vault storage with redemption options in Switzerland. The XAUT market cap reached $2.3 billion, quadrupling over the year, while competitor Paxos’s PAXG stood at $1.7 billion under federal oversight. Tether’s gold reserves have faced scrutiny over transparency and audit standards.

Privacy & Surveillance

Wegmans has expanded biometric surveillance in its New York City stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn, collecting facial, eye, and voice data from shoppers, with posted notices stating the measures are intended to enhance safety and security for patrons and employees. This follows a 2024 pilot program initially limited to select employees, which included assurances of data deletion, though current notices do not specify details on storage duration, retention, or sharing with third parties. Privacy advocates have raised concerns over the lack of transparency on data handling and potential for misuse. Regulatory efforts in New York, including a 2023 City Council bill to restrict such technologies after incidents like Madison Square Garden’s use of facial recognition, have stalled, with existing rules requiring only signage and no enforcement penalties, leaving recourse to individual legal action.

Health

Bayer, owner of Monsanto, filed federal lawsuits against Pfizer, BioNTech, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson, alleging unauthorized use of Monsanto’s patented mRNA stabilization techniques—originally developed in the 1980s for genetically modified crops—in COVID-19 vaccines to enhance spike protein expression. The complaints allege the companies removed destabilizing genetic sequences and substituted codons to prevent mRNA degradation and boost protein output, generating over $93 billion in revenue from these products without licensing the technology. Bayer seeks royalties but has stated it does not aim to halt vaccine distribution. The defendants have not yet publicly responded to the allegations.

So she talked her wife into behaving badly towards ICE to “save our immigrant neighbors”. And is not upset because the wife was killed following the instructions she gave her. They had been following ICE around and harassing them all day. They saw the ICE agents stopped and the passenger got out to film while Renee was tasked with the “civil disobediance” while her wife was filming her being “strong and brave”. Renee pulled up blocking in the ICE vehicle and was confronted. I don’t know if she wanted to frighten the agent in front of her truck or run him over or was just “scared” but she did the ultimate FAFO. She paid for her stupidity with her life.

Being a history nerd, and having an undergraduate degree in history, my mind almost always goes to seeking analogies for current events in past events. Historically, it was rare for people to be able to see the ultimate end of seemingly not very significant events. Yesterday’s events in Minneapolis brought to mind John Brown’s 1859 raid on the Federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry. The raid was quashed, the actors captured. John Brown was found guilty of treason and hanged. The situation seemed contained. I am sure that the normalcy bias of the time allowed most people to believe that the country had dodged another bullet. In less than two years the country would be engaged in a brutal, violent, civil war.

As I follow the news and commentary from yesterday’s events, I am struck by how differently the right and the left have already crystalized opposite views as to what happened. There were immediate positions taken as to who was right or wrong, good or evil, in the situation. Facts seemed to be almost irrelevant as they were interpreted by each side to justify its own narrative.

I should not be surprised by this division. It has existed for some time. It’s just that the responses yesterday hit me again as to how divided we are. Honest discussion and rational reaction have nearly disappeared and may have already become impossible.

This opens up a whole new set of questions for me. I have mild hearing impairment corrected with hearing aides. I put them in upon waking and don’t take them out until I’m going into the shower before bed. They are the nice modern Bluetooth ones that answer my phone, stream podcasts, and are able to access the system for hearing impaired people in theaters, movies and concerts.

Now I’m wondering if they are zapping my brain!

Europe might make concessions on Greenland in exchange for security guarantees for Ukraine, writes Politico.

It seems that key players in Europe have realized that their opinion won’t be seriously sought.

Therefore, they are trying to “bargain” for something on peripheral issues to save face and obtain additional guarantees. This points to a certain weakness in Europe’s position, which is forced to seek indirect paths instead of taking a clear and strong stance at the core of the discussion.

Chris, you might want to check this out. Martin Armstrong says that one of the reasons why Trump invaded Venezuela was because Russia was looking to send nuclear arms to both Venezuela and Cuba.

Armstrong says he’s been called into Washington to try and find a way to end the Russian conflict. Apparently the Neocons need and want war at all costs. When chaos erupts it makes Lindsey Graham smile. There are other things that make Lindsey Graham smile but that would require adding a NSFW to the comment.

What am I missing about MA? His articles get posted and mentioned here quite often. I understand there’s some controversy around him and his computer simulation but even with an open mind the interviews I’ve watched of him come across as him being an overly elaborate storyteller; with him just happening to be at the centre of each of them, or at the right place at the right time. One was about having to fly in to directly advise Thatcher on a particular matter only it directly opposed comments about those same issues from someone I knew who was a senior civil servant around that time. My BS radar has been flashing since.

Excellent question! He has been advising governments around the world for several decades. He is a person who is on government speed dial whenever there’s a crisis, banking, finance, currency. He is also a lightning rod. Some dislike him, some think he’s a fraud, others think anyone can make his calls but his track record of forecasting events several years out is insane.

Kerry Lutz who is the host of the financial survival network wrote a book about Armstrong and all the correct calls he’s made over the years.

He was called in by the EU when they wanted to create the Euro. He advised them that unless the debts of EU member states was consolidated, the Euro would fail. They did not listen to him and the Euro today is in deep trouble.

Many years ago, there was one call in particular he made on an interview he did on USAWatchdog.com and he told Greg Hunter when the stock market was trending down, he said the Stock Market would hit past 41,000. At the time it was half that and the consensus was it was in for a major correction. I heard that and called BS when he said it on the interview. He was correct and we were all left with egg on our faces.

He also called many years in advance, war breaking out in Eastern Europe. Around 2011-2012 he said his computer projected a war breaking out in Ukraine in 2014. He was right again.

Finally, he has explained why he went to prison for several years and probably would have died there if not for the US Supreme Court intervening. He relates the story that the CIA and US Government wanted the source code to his computer which correctly forecasts all these events around the world, well in advance.

He refused and they made up bogus charges and put him jail, hoping he would break. So there are some who thinks he’s a fraud or he’s lucky but you have to be the luckiest person on the planet to make the correct calls he’s done over the past 40+ years.

Thanks for that, I’ll check that out. I wonder if the computer actually exists? Or could it be a ‘plot device’ he’s able to hide the fact behind that he’s either psychic, or is/was able to remote view potential upcoming events during the Cold War and beyond?

As we see repeatedly when those with the reins want things, maybe like you happen to stumble on ZPE, or you develop a system that can predict the future you tend to skip prison and end up on a cold metal table following an unfortunate but definitely solo conclusion and they end up the new owners so it’s interesting he’s been ‘allowed’ to walk around, unless the model is a part of it and he has (or is) the other part.

Thank you for the insight!

I suppose. But these work much better than the older versions. Compliance with regular use of hearing aides can be pretty low because of the inability to adjust for things like background noise, putting a phone up to your ear and having the thing squeal, being able to hear at venues, etc. These little buggers work great. So I’m tempted to avoid looking into that.

@permiegirl take a look at these mini-slivers by GiaWellness. I have been looking at getting them for my kid who wears ear buds all the time. I sold this stuff a decade ago and I believe it all works. (I still have inventory but they didn’t make these mini slivers back then.) Maybe these will work on your hearing aids?
