I understand the concept of debt based money.  In that every time debt is issued, money is created.  And every time debt is repaid, money is extinguished.  
My question is if the above is true, then why is there more debt in the system than money.  My understanding is US. Debt is around $50 trillion and M3 is less than $22 trillion.

I appreciate your answer to this question.
