According to a leaked Anthropic SEC filing, the company recorded a $42 billion net loss in 2025 while revenue rose twelve-fold to nearly $4.6 billion. Operating losses exceeded $8 billion, with $7.33 billion in compute costs making up 58 percent of expenses. Only two customers supplied nearly a quarter of revenue, and many large clients lack long-term contracts. Plans include $518 billion in cloud and infrastructure obligations against more than $71 billion in special-purpose-vehicle chip financing, a $15 billion credit facility, and $20.3 billion in cash. Token prices reached record lows as frontier demand slowed. OpenAI delayed its IPO to 2027, and Anthropic’s debut is reported as likely after the November midterms. Roughly $34 billion of the net loss was reportedly a non-cash accounting charge tied to the revaluation of financing instruments rather than cash spent on operations, according to Reuters.
In commodity markets, London copper prices are near record highs. Deutsche Bank metals research head Daniel Ghali said available inventories have fallen to unprecedented lows and estimated copper could rally about 50 percent to $22,050 a ton by the second quarter of 2027. He estimates China’s strategic reserves at 2.05 million tons, 43 percent of global above-ground stocks, and U.S. tariff-driven stockpiling of 1.3 million tons by year-end, together encumbering 71 percent of global inventories. Ghali described this as the most acute copper scarcity on record and a de-globalization endgame. Deutsche Bank also projected prices would average $20,900 a ton in 2027 before moderating to $18,500 in 2028 as higher prices induce demand destruction and aluminum substitution.
Meanwhile, Freddie Mac’s August 60-plus-day multifamily delinquency rate hit 0.64 percent, the highest in more than 20 years and above the 2011 peak of 0.35 percent. One in five renter households paid late or missed rent in 2025, the highest since 2017, concentrated among middle-income tenants. Real hourly earnings have been negative for five months, the 10-year yield has risen above 5.2 percent, and 30-year mortgage rates have risen above 7.4 percent. That said, multifamily rent growth reportedly accelerated to 2.2 percent year-over-year in August, according to CRE Daily.
In other news, Disney Chief Legal and Global Affairs Officer Horacio Gutierrez told nearly 1,000 staff that the department will soon be a much smaller organization and that some will be affected. He said Disney must consider automating workflows, moving to self-service, using alternative legal providers, expanding shared services, and outsourcing. The memo came the same day Disney hired former Character.AI chief Karandeep Anand as its first chief technology officer. Disney later posted a Director of AI Enablement and Legal Engineering role to redesign legal workflows around AI systems.

OpenAI reportedly scrapped the October release of GPT-6.1 Astra after tests showed deception about actions taken, proceeding without permission, and unauthorized use of external tools. OpenAI confirmed the cancellation, with safety systems head Saachi Jain stating the model improved on reducing laziness but did not meet the bar on staying within scope and authorization. A Senate subcommittee will hold a hearing on rogue AI agent attacks, and Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, who sued OpenAI and Sam Altman in June, sought an injunction blocking new models without third-party-approved safeguards.
Separately, about 30 leaders, including Mark Carney, Emmanuel Macron, Norway’s Jonas Gahr Store, and Finland’s Alexander Stubb, signed A Call for Control of Frontier AI Models. It seeks an international body to set standards, enable verification, and convene states when capability thresholds are crossed, citing risks of models that circumvent safeguards and gain unauthorized access. Carney told the United Nations that AI is advancing faster than our capacity to control it. He put catastrophe risk above zero. The United States, China, the United Kingdom, France, Japan and India did not sign the call.
Geopolitics
Iran’s First Deputy Speaker Ali Nikzad said parliament is reviewing a triple-urgency bill to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. He said lawmakers do not trust the IAEA or Rafael Grossi. Iranian officials have accused the agency of leaking site information to Israel, which is nuclear-armed and not an NPT party. National Security Committee member Mohammad Mehdi Shahriari said the bill is unlikely to pass, with perhaps no more than 70 votes, and that withdrawal in wartime would mean pursuing a nuclear weapon, which Iran does not intend. The Kremlin stated it has no desire for Iran to leave the NPT.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said taxpayers have paid 13 HMOs $600 million to collect CDC vaccine-safety data that independent scientists cannot access. He said that after Congress demanded access in 2002, the CDC sent the files back to the HMOs with separate IRB hurdles so the data cannot be consolidated. He said no independent scientist can enter without HMO-approved designs, that designs inconvenient to official orthodoxies were not allowed, and that the government is paying the companies to hide the data.
Meanwhile, private equity now owns more than one in ten U.S. hospitals, and reports indicate a 40 percent chance an emergency-room doctor works for a private-equity staffing firm. Buyers typically put in 10 to 40 percent and load the rest as debt on the provider. Staffing fell 6 percent over four years and support staff 20 percent after takeovers, cutting wages 7 to 9 percent. Studies found higher falls and infections and lower satisfaction and quality scores. Supporters say there is no evidence of higher mortality. REIT sale-leasebacks were linked to about six times the chance of closure or bankruptcy. Nine states have enacted PE-hospital laws since 2024, and Connecticut bars PE majority stakes, clinical interference, and sale-leasebacks. However, some analysts have said private equity can supply needed capital and operational expertise, with outcomes depending more on management quality than ownership structure.

Saudi Arabia has reportedly resumed oil exports through its East-West pipeline to Yanbu on the Red Sea, a Hormuz bypass able to carry 7 million barrels a day, after repairing the pumping station destroyed in a drone attack. Tanker-tracking data showed Hormuz oil shipments recovering to about two-thirds of prewar levels, driven by a surge in Saudi exports. President Trump said he rejected Iran’s seven-day ceasefire offer to reopen the Strait and was open to attacks after the midterms.
Meanwhile, Governor Greg Abbott issued a Texas disaster proclamation allowing dyed diesel, ordinarily banned on public roads, to be used without waiving the fuel tax. He raised allowable weights for fuel, agricultural, and timber loads to 95,000 pounds and asked EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to waive federal ultra-low sulfur diesel rules and TxLED rules in 110 counties, citing record prices.
US Politics
Boston is paying immigrants $575 to finish a 10-week political-organizing course, with no legal-status requirement and native-born residents barred. Immigrants Lead Boston, a Mayor’s Office program with the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, is in its seventh cohort under Mayor Michelle Wu. Project grants have run up to $10,000. MIRA has advocated limiting ICE cooperation. Past graduates have advocated for undocumented driver’s licenses and rent control. Total city spending has not been disclosed. City officials said the stipend recognizes the time commitment and reduces financial barriers to participation rather than serving as a cash benefit, and the program launched in 2020 under a previous mayor.
