I simply ask is that necessary? 90% of the time they say no. Any other response, or attempt to get me to comply, results in me leaving my goods on the counter and walking out. People just need to say no!!!
I will add there are some places now, like Home Depot and Walmart that have only self-check outs with signs that say no cash. I tell them I want to pay cash. They say “okay”. I will help you. People need to stop being such accepting, complacent fools. All this digital crap only stops with non-compliance.
