Canadian Politics

Mark Carney, Canada’s new prime minister, has announced plans to address what he perceives as excessive free speech on American social media platforms. Carney’s government aims to intervene to combat racism, misogyny, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and other forms of hate speech, as well as criminal activities targeting children. This move has sparked discussions on freedom of speech versus the need for online safety, with potential pushback from U.S. figures like Trump and Vance anticipated. Elon Musk, CEO of X Corp, has publicly opposed Carney’s initiative, stating that overregulation can stifle innovation and freedom.

Additionally, Carney has proposed capping Canada’s immigration at less than 5% of the country’s population, which, based on current estimates, would allow for approximately 2,076,434 new immigrants. This policy aims to manage population growth and its impact on infrastructure and services. Some immigration advocates argue that this cap might not address the underlying issues of integration and infrastructure support for new immigrants.

In other news, Elections Canada has overturned the Conservative win in the Milton East-Halton Hills South riding due to alleged data entry errors. The initial 298-vote lead for Conservative Parm Gill was nullified, handing the seat to Liberal Kristina. The Conservative Party of Canada has expressed concern over the process, calling for an independent audit to ensure the integrity of the electoral system.

US Politics

The DC Circuit Court of Appeals has stayed a district court’s injunction that would have required the rehiring of liberal Voice of America (VOA) staff. This decision by the court underscores the judiciary’s adherence to the law, preventing judicial overreach into executive employment decisions. Legal Professor Margot Cleveland has highlighted that this ruling establishes that courts have no jurisdiction over firings or grant terminations, potentially limiting judicial oversight over executive actions. This is expected to have impacts on other cases currently being litigated.

A controversy at Burlington Public Schools in Massachusetts has led to legal action and a broader discussion on educational content and parental oversight. The school administered a youth risk behavior survey with explicit sexual content, despite many parents opting out. The Massachusetts Liberty Legal Center has filed complaints with the Department of Education, arguing that the school’s actions violated federal law by ignoring opt-out requests.

Economy

The Port of Los Angeles is experiencing an economic downturn, with import volumes dropping by about a third and further drops expected in the coming weeks. This decline is attributed to high prices, uncertainty, and global trade slowdowns. Retailers are preparing for potential shortages if the situation persists. Gene Seroka, the Port of Los Angeles Executive Director, has emphasized the need for swift action to mitigate the economic fallout, noting that the ripple effects are already being felt across various sectors.

A report suggests a potential shift in the U.S. monetary system from the petrodollar to a Bitcoin-backed system. This proposal comes in light of growing skepticism towards fiat currencies and an increasing interest in decentralized assets. The Financial Times has also discussed both the potential benefits of a Bitcoin-backed system for reducing national debt and the risks, including Bitcoin’s volatility and the environmental concerns related to mining.

In a related vein, the European Union is set to implement stringent Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations by 2027, which will ban anonymous cryptocurrency accounts and privacy-preserving tokens like Monero and Zcash. This move aims to increase oversight of crypto service providers. CryptoPrivacy on X has expressed concerns that these regulations could infringe on individual privacy rights.

Warren Buffett has announced his retirement as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway at the end of the year, with Greg Abel set to succeed him. Despite a 14% drop in operating earnings in the first quarter due to various factors including wildfires and forex losses, Berkshire’s cash reserves have hit a record $348 billion. Buffett has commented on trade policies, advocating for balanced trade over tariffs. A financial analyst on X has argued that Buffett’s departure could lead to a shift in Berkshire’s investment focus, potentially moving away from Buffett’s conservative approach.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police kept Canada from frontier chaos. Yes, I remember the wooden sidewalks of Edmonton. That was long ago.
Canada was law abiding and everyone was as well educated as they could afford. Then Canadians discovered they could vote themselves priviledges and benefits. Of course, this realization was a corruption of the whole idea of a vote. And corruption spread. So today the concept of freedom of speech that Victorian Canada and Britain relished will no longer exist. A heirarchy of bureaucrats will decide what people can think. And what has become of the much respected “Mounties” today? Whose cultural norms rule? As in the USA, the public purse has become a grab-bag, cookie jar, take what you can account. The bottom line is this: from where will the discipline come to run something as complex as a country?
Good luck, Canada. You are going to need it.
