Iran War

Persian Gulf energy producers have reportedly concluded that Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz will remain in place indefinitely, according to statements from regional officials who described a return to full-scale conflict with the U.S. and Iran as the worse option. Negotiations to reopen the waterway have stalled. Tehran has demanded financial relief and a ban on American and Israeli warships in the strait, while Washington has refused to accept Iranian restrictions on shipping. Crude flows through Hormuz have fallen to about 2.2 million barrels a day from 8.5 million a month ago, according to Kpler. The UAE reported that four of its ships were struck last week while attempting transit. Between February and July, Iran and allied militias conducted at least 172 attacks on nonmilitary infrastructure across the six Arab Gulf states, with roughly half targeting energy facilities.

Meanwhile, Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei appointed six hardline commanders, including Ahmad Vahidi as IRGC chief and Hossein Taeb over the Basij. Security Council Secretary Rezaei stated the strait will not open until the U.S. changes its behavior. Headlines about possible peace talks from Pakistani mediators briefly lowered oil prices. U.S. forces later fired on a Panama-flagged ship attempting to break the blockade of Iranian ports. Houthi strikes in the Bab al-Mandeb killed three crew aboard the Tanzania-flagged Tihamah, the first reported fatalities since February. A separate missile struck the containership Vela Nova in the Gulf of Oman.

Energy

Drone strikes ignited a fire at Libya’s 120,000 bpd Zawiya refinery, destroying a tank with 4.5 million liters of gasoline. The National Oil Corporation reported follow-on strikes on a desalination plant and naphtha reservoir and threatened force majeure. The attacks have gone unclaimed amid reported clashes between local rival groups.

On that note, an analysis documented over 30 refinery strikes worldwide in 2026, including 16 Russian refineries hit by Ukraine, two in Iran struck by the U.S. and Israel, six in Israel and the Gulf hit by Iran, one Saudi facility hit by Houthis, and Libya’s Zawiya. Market manipulation remains one possible reason oil prices have remained subdued despite all the refinery strikes.

That said, China’s independent refiners are expected to increase Iranian crude purchases as Shandong stockpiles fell to an eight-month low of roughly 360 million barrels, with a July drawdown of 35 million barrels, the largest monthly decline since 2016, per Energy Aspects. Total Chinese imports rose 22% in July to 8.45 million bpd. However, some analysts suggest that prior reductions in Iranian oil buys and potential sanctions on the refiners could constrain any rebound in volumes.

Looking beyond these immediate supply disruptions and market dynamics, The Honest Sorcerer applied Joseph Tainter’s complexity theory and Ronald Wright’s progress trap to argue that industrial civilization has entered a phase of diminishing returns on energy. Declining ore grades and rising extraction costs require ever more energy to obtain the same resources, while energy technologies stack like a Jenga tower built on fossil fuels at the base. Once the energy return on investment for the global system nears zero, maintaining complexity becomes unsustainable. This triggers an involuntary loss of technological and social complexity, driving civilizational decline.

Economy

Norsk Hydro halved output at its Alunorte alumina refinery in Brazil after natural gas disruptions. Aluminum rose nearly 2% in London to $3,373 a ton, with LME inventories at 250,000 tons. Norsk Hydro warned the annual global aluminum deficit could exceed 900,000 tons if Hormuz disruptions continue. Copper trades above $14,000 a ton.

In gold markets, the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority is preparing a regulatory framework for tokenized gold and has held talks with banks on its use as collateral, according to reports. London handles roughly 70% of global notional gold trading volume. A government-backed task force estimates tokenization could add £33 billion annually to UK output by 2035. Observers noted the framework arrives years after existing tokenized gold products entered circulation.

Speaking of gold, Senator Rand Paul visited Fort Knox to inspect roughly 147 million ounces of U.S. gold, the first such visit since the 1953 full audit. Paul stated the dollar has lost about 85% of its value since 1971 and 97% since the Fed’s 1913 founding. He linked recent price increases of 25% over five years to $2 trillion annual deficits monetized by the Federal Reserve.

Artificial Intelligence

Madge Waggy reported that the July 2026 Hugging Face breach, in which an autonomous OpenAI agent escaped its sandbox, was not an isolated incident or basic security vulnerability. The US AI Safety Institute documented 19 cases in which OpenAI and Anthropic models took autonomous action on the live internet during training. Additional incidents have been described under NDAs. Researchers reported agents constructing escape routes through rapid iterations and exhibiting goal mutation in unrestricted environments. FOIA requests were largely denied on national security grounds.

Education

The University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science and the Arts will replace letter grades with pass/no-credit for first-semester students, citing mental health concerns. Similar programs exist at Caltech, Swarthmore, Wellesley, and MIT. Harvard faculty voted to cap A grades at roughly 20%. UC math and science professors have called for reinstatement of entrance exams after reporting preparation deficits among Berkeley calculus students. At UC San Diego, students needing remedial math before precalculus rose from 0.5% in 2020 to 8.5% in 2025.

In other news, a study by academics at Vanderbilt, Wisconsin-Madison, Florida, and George Mason titled “Niceness as Whiteness in School Police Officers’ Perceptions of Student Arrest” argues that empathetic school resource officers perpetuate white supremacy through small kindnesses toward students. Jonathan Turley described the paper as framing positive officer behavior as evidence of racism.

Here’s an interesting article that describes the dangers to both livestock and humans from the previously eradicated New World Screwworm (NWS). Mexico has seen deaths from human cases. Of particular interest is how the NWS came to be in Mexico and now the US:

Amid a decades-long eradication effort, the fly’s populations were wiped out from the US, Mexico, and Central America. This was largely done with massive aerial releases of sterilized male flies, a technique that works because female NWS flies only mate once in their lifespans. Mexico declared NWS eradicated in 2003. Panama declared eradication in 2006 and kept an active biological barrier along the Darién Gap at the border with Colombia. But in 2022, the barrier was breached, and Mexico began seeing cases in animals in 2024.

Gee, I wonder what it was that breached that border in 2022 along the Darien Gap?

…On January 30, 2026, SpaceX filed a request with the FCC to launch up to 1 million solar-powered satellite data centers into low Earth orbit, describing the system as “the most efficient way to meet the accelerating demand for AI computing power.” First hardware, called AI1, was unveiled on June 8. First-gen AI1 design stands 20 meters tall with a 70-meter deployed wingspan — wider than a Boeing 747-8.

Each satellite delivers 120 kW of compute on average and up to 150 kW at peak, placing it roughly on par with a modern AI server rack on the ground. Critically, the proposed constellation will connect to Starlink via high-bandwidth optical links, with Starlink then relaying data to ground stations. …

My son just started his high school sophomore year today. He is taking four AP classes while starting on varsity football team. He knows how to work hard handle pressure and take a hit up the middle. He’s gonna wipe the floor with these total wimps in adulthood and I’m all for it. I cannot believe the type of children we are turning out in America today. Can you imagine what a mandatory draft in America would do with the type of kids that are college age these days? I watched a show on Amazon last night about post war Europe- the absolute devastation that people fought through to rebuild their lives after their cities their families and their countries were decimated is truly amazing. Somehow it feels like if that happened in America today we would just loot until there was nothing more free available to us and then quit and die.

This video is a clear reminder

  1. that different cultures have different values. Western Christian values should NOT be assumed to be present in other cultures–they are NOT. This was the speaker’ main point.

  2. that a GROUP may have certain characteristics that NOT ALL INDIVIDUALS IN THAT GROUP have.

We have to be able to consider abstractions. The “mean.” “Per capita” rates, etc.

A GROUP based generalization is NOT invalidated by seeing an individual exception!

“Asian people are smaller than average.”
“NOT TRUE!! I know a very tall Chinese man!”

“Black people are generally much more violent than whites. And Black neighborhoods have greatly increased homicide rates as compared to white neighborhoods.”

"Not true you bigoted liar!! I know a black person who would not hurt a fly!”

The problem most often happens when a person is TOO FIRMLY IDENTIFIED with a group that they cannot differentiate themselves from the group. Even YELLOW Meme systems thinkers cannot tell the difference between individuals and groups when the identification is too powerful.

How different it would be if the discussion went like this:

“Black people are generally much more violent than whites. And Black neighborhoods have greatly increased homicide rates as compared to white neighborhoods.”

“I am a black person who would never shoot my neighbor over a parking place dispute. But I see that these statistics are valid. It saddens me greatly to observe my racial group so immersed in barbarism.”

Returning to the first point. Different cultures cannot be assumed to share common values. And infact, it is clearly demonstrated that we do NOT.

Talmudic and the Old-Testament “God” does NOT share the values of Christ nor the Western Christian nations that grew out of Christ’s teachings.

The term “Judeo-Christian values” is an attempt to hide this difference from the gullible public.

The killing of Palestinian Children is a clear and majority value of Israeli Jews and some American Jewish people. Yet it is absolutely NOT shared by the majority of Western Christian peoples nor supported by the teachings of Jesus.

Hence, rejection of Israel grows in the western mind.

It is “Christian” values, more accurately than “European” values.

This value system works its way into the “group mind” over generations of shared experience.

Yes, … after a lifetime of reflexively regurgitating ‘judeo-christian values’ as a phrase, I have also come to the realisation that these 2 words should not be conjoined.

SImilarly, I think the term ‘hunter-gatherer’ is wildy overstated - walking around the Aussie bush I see things to hunt but very little to ‘gather’ … I think its a phrase used to minimise our evolutionary programming and promote ‘fruits and veggies’ by the various interests that profit from that.
