And limit the H1B employee to 35 hours a week. I think the biggest difference is the H1B employee is so concerned about losing their job and getting sent home that the employers can pretty much treat them as slaves.

I agree. The H1B system needs fixing.
I can cite many anecdotes where companies clearly chose the cheaper immigrant labor. Something needs to be done to fix the system for domestic labor to have a chance and some hope.
But I don’t think H1B is the root problem.
DEI caused big problems for engineers. Suppose your company mandated 50% female engineers by 2030. Given gender ratios in schools, the result will be hiring any female STEM grad regardless of skill over more qualified male candidates.
I think that largely ended with Trump.
There are other, larger economic issues impacting the economy that result in fewer hires for young engineers.
Dollar devaluation will likely reduce the immigrant labor issue, as the wage gap narrows with exchange rate changes.
Bottom line is the issue is complex and needs fixing, but there is an argument for selective immigration hires to fill existing gaps.

I have a friend who is still in the industry - he’s a white guy, and it seems to be a pretty stressful place for him. When I was there there were bits and pieces of H1B, but it was mostly Americans. The numbers suggest that has changed pretty dramatically. I’m guessing this is not about “talent”, its about Industry’s desire to have cheap near-slave labor.
That’s part of why we had the migrant thing - cheap nannies and gardeners for the Oligarchy. I’ve been out of things for a while though. Maybe I’ll ask my friends who are still in the belly of the beast.

This event could become new covid obstacle for Trump(media managed to lever that during 2020 to make Trump look bad… it was skillfully done). Not taking seriously this aspect which to be fair many thought he implied to fix in election campaign, is key point. Reasons not matter why, it is such important piece, especially now that onshoring is happening, so it puts bad contrast dragging H1B folks to those. I wonder what deal Trump is going to discuss with Modi (India PM) as this smells that(Im not saying Trump personally but whole deepstate is behind that ofcourse, as H1B is at least 10 years old abuse thing).
Remittances to certain countries are so colossal scale it is also state to state political level “thing”. Many H1B save up or directly send money to home country, and those money flows can be huge. Some countries can deliberately skip increasing social spending because they count on those money flows to keep grandpa and grandma fed by kids and grandkids salaries from abroad.
Im waiting more online systems crashes from this. Just that one story where people are put to very stressful job situation without adequate skills and training, leaves huge holes and asks for disasters… eg computer systems down for large regions or services. We’ve had quite a few of those in recent years. FAFO situation asking for trouble. Expect army of corporate PR folks to explain away why people start getting killed.
However so far Democrats celebrated small win 3 in districts. Im not aware how big difference that will make but looking forward more Mamdanis(socialists) doesnt look good either. Uniparty at work.

So Leftist MSN decided to post this article. I have no problem with Democrats calling out Trump if he did have involvements with Jeffrey Epstein. I suspect the allegations could be true. But here lies my problem and it has to do with hypocrisy.
Where were the Leftists and Democrats when it was revealed by none other than Ashley Biden that she took inappropriate showers with Dad-Dee and became highly sexualized at an early age? This is TPTB, taking care and protecting its own. Biden should have been investigated and thrown in jail because of doodling his daughter at an early age.

Here’s a thought. Maybe the “bureaucrats” just don’t follow orders issued by Orange Hitler. They stall, or they deflect, or they are “busy”, or whatever. So he’s nominally in command, but nothing gets done because the rank & file simply don’t execute.
Minus CBP, which seems to be pretty enthusiastic.
So Trump knows this, and his top-level people know this, but - if this is revealed, it will lead to a confidence collapse in government so spectacular…we’ll get that market crash and then some.

I know its not really a Good thing… pushing AI and what it eventually could do, but because of it having Bill publiclly drop climate push… it kinda takes the wind out of the sales of the whole Great Reset and Carbon Credit score agenda … limited cheeseburgers and 15 minute city justification…
Now I know they are pushing it hard anyway but what exactly is the new narrative on why do we need to get rid of cows and stop eating meat now?.. Trump core identity is a 90s democrat, which by today’s standard is a mild reformer. Despite his talk and bluster, he’s not a hardliner, just a… mild reformer. This sucking chest wound is getting a band-aid on it. He’s not going to war with neoliberalism, just hoping to curb its worst excesses.

Yeah, CBP-wise, the border seems pretty shut but we still have new Mexican restaurants and car washes going in our 7,000 person town (one Mexican restaurant, no car washes in town when I moved here in 2014; seven Mexican restaurants, a Mexican food market, and two really huge and nice big city sized car washes now, and three new groovy coffee drive thru’s) so I’m guessing the cartels are laundering like a Ukrainian government here in the Poteau, OK metroplex. So, no slowdown in drug trafficking around here. Plus, he’s still about 19 million minimum shy of reported deportations (not the CBP’s fault I know).

Police departments in big blue cities have signed on to the “30 by 30” effort in which their goal is to have 30% of the whole departments’ officers be female by 2030. That will be ruinous.

My former employer would layoff US Citizen Engineers and then post H1B for literally the same job at substantially reduced costs. Problem I saw with H1B engineers, they hadn’t cut their teeth in mfg environments, and would make huge and expensive mistakes in their “perfect” designs

Eric Weinstein has been beating the H1B drum for many years. He has basically described them as a scam that was created to intentionally suppress US STEM labor wages. Cheap slave labor indeed…
Excellent discussion with Ed! I don’t tune into his stuff regularly but he’s usually quite informative when I do.
For these pre-recorded discussions it obviously takes time to get them prepped and rolled out. Would it be possible to include the date it was recorded in future releases? I was interested in some of the moves Ed mentioned, but can’t quite hone in on them because I don’t know the reference time.

This is why it makes sense for kids to go to community college for the first year or 2 for the basics then transfer in to the state university to finish up. Many state national guards have a program giving kids free tuition if you join. People have various feelings on the military but its a way to get through college without debt.
