Fox news was all over, of course the bullet disintegrated when it hit bone.

30-06 bullets don’t generally disintegrate when they hit something solid, unless it’s frangible ammo, which is unusual in that particular bullet. Even if they had a small piece of a normal bullet, it’s a simple task to determine the bullet diameter.

Of course “could not match” probably means that the bullet jacket was too torn apart to provide a conclusive match.

Which is a different statement from “did not match” which many people are claiming over on X.

They could still do a lead isotope or impurities analysis to provide a link…I would have assumed they would do that if the slightly-dodgy barrel imperfection/groove-land matching didn’t work out.
