Geopolitics
The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier entered the Mediterranean, joining what officials describe as the largest U.S. military buildup in the Middle East since the 2003 Iraq invasion. A second carrier strike group is nearing the region. The Ford, accompanied by the USS Mahan destroyer, is extending its deployment. Reports indicate the Trump administration is considering a limited strike on Iran to secure nuclear and missile concessions. Trump mentioned a 10-to-15-day negotiation window. Iran warned that all U.S. regional assets would become targets in retaliation and presented a draft deal, stating diplomacy is reachable. Recent U.S.-Iran talks in Oman and Geneva stalled over enrichment halts and missile limits, with Iran signaling reduced restraint after prior incidents.
Relatedly, a GAMAAN poll, disseminated via U.S.-funded Psiphon VPN and linked to USAID-backed groups, found 70% to 81% of Iranians oppose the Islamic Republic, favoring democracy or secular alternatives. A phone survey by the Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland showed 75% expect constitutional continuity and limited protest aims short of systemic change. GAMAAN cited its methodologyâs reliance on anonymity in authoritarian contexts and ties to U.S. government grantees like the National Endowment for Democracy.
Economy
President Trump announced a 10% global tariff on all countries, effective Tuesday for 150 days unless extended by Congress. Critics argue the tariffs risk higher prices for consumers. The move follows a Supreme Court ruling that struck down his use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act for emergency tariffs. In a 6-3 decision, the court affirmed alternative authorities, including Sections 122, 201, and 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 and Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which Trump invoked. Trump called the ruling disappointing and criticized certain justices. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said revenue projections remain unchanged.
In other news, Blue Owl Capital halted redemptions in its retail private credit fund OBDC II after requests exceeded limits, turning to capital returns through loan repayments and asset sales. Blue Owl described the asset sales as accelerating liquidity and validating portfolio quality. The firm sold $1.4 billion in direct-lending investments across three funds at near par value to institutional buyers, including pension funds and insurers. It used proceeds to repay debt and distribute about 30% of OBDC IIâs net asset value. The moves came amid questions over valuations and software sector exposure, following a reversed merger proposal that risked 20% investor losses, according to reports. Blue Owlâs stock reached two-year lows. Analysts cited potential revenue impacts from shrinking assets under management and concerns over private credit market strains.
Separately, Blue Owl could not secure third-party financing for a $4 billion data center in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, co-developed for CoreWeave. Lenders cited caution over the cloud providerâs junk credit rating and AI-related debt risks. Blue Owl said the project, already under construction, will proceed with internal funding amid challenges in syndicating AI infrastructure loans.
US Politics
Senator Mitch McConnell has not scheduled a floor vote on the SAVE Act, which would mandate voter ID for federal elections. Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) questioned McConnellâs cognitive capacity and suggested staff influence, drawing parallels to President Bidenâs later years. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) accused McConnell of disregarding public will. McConnell previously opposed national ID rules in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece, warning they could enable future Democratic federal election changes.
The Department of Transportation revoked certifications for more than 550 commercial driving schools that train truck and bus drivers, after investigators found unqualified instructors, fraudulent addresses, and inadequate hazardous materials training. Critics warn the closures could exacerbate the trucking industryâs shortage of approximately 80,000 drivers. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration deployed over 300 investigators across all 50 states, issuing 448 notices of proposed removals. Officials said 109 providers voluntarily exited the registry upon investigatorsâ approach, with 97 schools remaining under scrutiny. The action follows Trump administration measures, including stricter English proficiency rules that sidelined more than 9,500 truckers and new standards for non-domiciled commercial driverâs licenses.
Artificial Intelligence
Amazon Web Services experienced two outages linked to its AI coding tools, including a 13-hour December disruption in China. Reports said Amazonâs Kiro tool autonomously deleted and recreated a cost-analysis environment without secondary approval. A prior incident involved Amazon Q Developer. AWS attributed the issues to user error rather than AI and added peer reviews and training while aiming for 80% developer adoption.
Pentagon AI deployments encountered issues, including Andurilâs 30 AI drone boats idling during a May 2025 Navy test and a counterdrone system that sparked a 22-acre fire in Oregon in August. Experts cited risks from brittle models, inadequate training data, hallucinations, and adversarial manipulations such as prompt injection. They urged development of military-grade AI over commercial systems amid competition with China. However, some reports praise certain military AI systems for providing enhanced situational awareness to soldiers.
AI-related incidents reported in media increased tenfold, from about 50 monthly in early 2020 to nearly 500 by January 2026, according to OECD data. Deepfakes increasingly target U.S. teens, with 1 in 17 aged 13-17 affected; more than 80% recognized harm. Human detection accuracy for AI-generated voices or videos ranges from 60-90%, raising misinformation risks as tools spread on platforms.
Lastly, Meta patented a large language model in 2023, led by CTO Andrew Bosworth, trained on user data to simulate posts, comments, likes, and messages after a userâs death or absence. The patent reflects trends in grief tech that recreates deceased personalities, amid debates over ethical concerns including grief processes and incentives from dormant accounts. Meta shelved the project, and Meta has stated it has no plans to implement the technology.
Energy
The United States is expanding its nuclear fuel supply chain, including mining, conversion, enrichment, and fabrication, though no new commercial reactors are under construction. This contrasts with dozens of reactors under construction in countries such as China. Uranium miner Ur-Energy plans output increases. Solstice Advanced Materials will boost conversion capacity. Centrus Energy is advancing a multibillion-dollar enrichment facility in Ohio with $900 million in Department of Energy funding. X-Energy received approval for a fuel fabrication plant. However, imports currently supply nearly all uranium for the existing fleet, with domestic enrichment only meeting one-third of needs and limited high-assay low-enriched uranium production for advanced reactors.
Privacy & Surveillance
The Kids Off Social Media Act, which has bipartisan support, would require identity verification for adults accessing platforms to protect children from harmful content. Proponents describe it as a child safety measure, while free speech advocates warn it could enable government censorship of lawful online speech. Critics warn of potential permanent audit trails and broader digital ID infrastructure, similar to expansions following the Patriot Act. Texas and Louisiana have challenged similar state age verification laws in court, alleging First Amendment violations.
