Epstein Files
Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie are preparing articles of impeachment against Attorney General Pam Bondi for not fully releasing Jeffrey Epstein-related documents as required by a new transparency law. The effort stems from partial disclosures that disappointed survivors and some Republican supporters. Khanna noted political challenges for Bondi, including MAGA influencer backlash, and hoped for fuller compliance within two weeks. Massie criticized the Department of Justice for asserting privilege over materials, contrasting the lawâs directives. The White House has described the Trump administration as the most transparent in history on the matter.
Newly released files include photographs of President Bill Clinton in a hot tub with an unidentified woman, on a plane with another woman, and traveling with Epstein to the UK, Middle East, Thailand, and a Moroccan royal wedding. Other figures mentioned include Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, Prince Andrew, Kevin Spacey, Chris Tucker, Diana Ross, and Walter Cronkite. A Clinton spokesperson dismissed the releases as a diversion from Trump scrutiny and stated no ongoing Epstein ties after his crimes.
Speaking of which, at least 16 files disappeared from the DOJâs Epstein webpage, including a photo of a desk drawer with Trump images: one with women in bathing suits and another from 2000 showing him with Melania Trump, Epstein, and Ghislaine Maxwell. Removals followed Fridayâs batch. The DOJ cited ongoing reviews for redactions of sensitive content like personally identifiable information or sexual matters. Attorney Gloria Allred contacted the DOJ for individuals with unredacted names, leading to promised corrections. Democrats on the House Oversight Committee questioned deletions and raised cover-up concerns. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said continued releases are expected in coming weeks due to redaction needs. The DOJ has stated that some removals addressed privacy protections for victims and witnesses, with additional redacted documents added subsequently.
Lastly, the files include a 1996 FBI complaint from Maria Farmer, an artist hired by Epstein, alleging theft of nude photos of her underage sisters and threats if she spoke out. Farmer urged investigation into Epsteinâs child pornography interest but received no follow-up for a decade. She described an assault by Epstein and Maxwell and lived in fear afterward. Her sister Annie testified about similar experiences at Epsteinâs New Mexico ranch. Lawyer Brad Edwards called the ignored report shameful, suggesting it could have prevented abuses if acted upon. A 2020 internal DOJ review omitted the complaint. The FBI has not publicly commented on the handling of the 1996 complaint.
Economy
A study across the US, UK, and Germany found 22% of online job postings last year were âghost jobsâ with no hiring intent, while a UK analysis reached 34%. Companies post them to build talent pools, appear growing, or sell applicant data. US cities like Los Angeles (30.5%), Philadelphia (30.1%), and Indianapolis (27.8%) had high rates, with LinkedIn at 27.4% fake overall.
US Politics
Fulton County, Georgia, officials admitted certifying approximately 315,000 early votes in the 2020 election without required signatures on tabulation tapes, violating state law. Attorney Ann Brumbaugh confirmed the lapse at a December 9 State Election Board hearing, noting enhanced procedures since but not disputing 2020. An investigation found failures at 36 of 37 advanced voting precincts to sign tapes and at 32 sites to verify zero tapes. Activist David Cross, via open records, said unsigned tapes are essential for authenticating totals and chain of custody, rendering votes uncertified under statute. The county transmitted results to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger regardless. County officials have characterized the issue as a procedural violation without evidence of intentional misconduct or impact on election outcomes.
Forty-one members of Congress, led by Representative Andrew Clyde, urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to stop defending National Firearms Act registration requirements after the $200 tax on items like silencers and short-barreled rifles was eliminated by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The letter argues the registry, previously upheld for taxation, loses constitutional basis without revenue and becomes an unauthorized federal gun registry. It cites Supreme Court precedents like Sonzinsky and Constantine tying provisions to taxing power and criticizes the DOJ for labeling items as weapons prone to misuse despite other NFA revenue. The DOJ has argued in court filings that registration continues as an independent regulatory measure to support public safety and enforcement.
Geopolitics
The US Coast Guard, with Department of Defense support, seized a second Venezuelan oil tanker in international waters off the coast, targeting sanctioned crude flows funding narco-terrorism and supporting Cuba and China. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem affirmed pursuit of illicit movements. The action follows President Trumpâs order for a total blockade, with warships deployed to disrupt Maduroâs regime and weaken allies. Officials described the pre-dawn operation without specifying location, amid military buildup. Brent crude prices dipped below $60 per barrel last week despite tensions. Venezuelaâs government has ordered naval escorts for its vessels and described the seizures as imperialist aggression, potentially heightening regional tensions.
British Politics
The UK government announced a ÂŁ20 million program to train teachers in identifying and addressing misogyny among pupils, particularly boys, to reduce violence against women and girls. The initiative includes courses on consent, sharing nude images, and challenging myths about relationships, with high-risk students referred to behavioral programs. Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips called the issue a national emergency, aiming to prevent radicalization into violence. The measures integrate into statutory guidance on relationships and sex education, emphasizing early intervention. The program follows data showing 40% of teenagers experience relationship abuse, often non-physical like criticism or phone checks. It targets misogynistic attitudes amid concerns over unaddressed sexual assaults involving migrants. Certain educators and analysts have raised concerns about the implementation burden on schools and the evidence linking minor misogynistic comments directly to severe violence. Others suggest the law is hypocritical, targeting young boys while turning a âblind eye to rape gangs because it might look racist.â
Meanwhile, a 36-year-old man in the UK was sentenced to 18 months in prison for two anti-immigration posts on X, viewed a combined 33 times. The posts, made after a car attack at a German Christmas market, called for burning migrant hotels and taking to the streets with force. They were reported by a family member during a feud. Prosecutors argued the content could incite disorder near local migrant accommodations. The defense described the posts as isolated rants from a man with mental health issues and no real-world impact. The judge ruled the posts intended to stir racial hatred and formed part of a pattern including complaints about hearing less English locally and asylum seekers. The case resembles another where an individual received a 31-month sentence for a post about asylum hotels after the Southport murders; that conviction led to the individualâs daughter being rejected from school. UK authorities arrested nearly 10,000 people for offensive online content in 2024. Some legal observers note the ruling aligns with UK laws prohibiting incitement to racial hatred, even for posts with limited reach, to prevent potential escalation of tensions.
European Politics
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor OrbĂĄn expressed full support for farmers protesting in Brussels against the EUâs Mercosur trade deal, stating they are â100 percent rightâ as it threatens European food security. The agreement with Latin American countries disadvantages local producers via increased competition, worsened by Green Deal regulations raising costs. Hungary opposes the deal, lacking qualified majority support, and OrbĂĄn aims to block it at the EU Summit. Protests near the European Commission encountered barbed wire, tear gas, and water cannons. EU officials have countered that the deal could reduce consumer food prices and strengthen geopolitical ties amid global trade challenges.
In Germany, Saxony-Anhalt extended its pandemic emergency declaration for the seventh timeâthe only state doing so repeatedly since others ended in 2024âenabling âŹ790 million from a special COVID-19 fund to bypass debt limits. Amid budget shortfalls, funds for pandemic resilience, hospital digitalization, and renovations go to other investments. State audit head Kay Barthel cited no objective crisis justification and called it a financing trick. Opposition from Greens, AfD, BSW, and FDP, including ruling CDU members, seeks to block it; BSWâs Sahra Wagenknecht proposed federal intervention via Article 37, echoed by FDPâs Wolfgang Kubicki. Over half of the âŹ2 billion fund is spent, with debt repayment starting in 2029. Government supporters have described the extension as necessary for maintaining pandemic preparedness, including upgrades to healthcare infrastructure.
Energy
Natural gas production in the US exceeded 110 billion cubic feet per day and continues growing, supporting AI data centers and LNG exports amid tightening supply. AIâs energy demands require dispatchable sources like gas over intermittent renewables, with depleted low-cost reserves shifting from excess cheap supply to price-sensitive conditions. Data centers may co-locate with gas generation for reliability, as downtime costs are high. LNG exports involve seven operational terminals, with more developing, potentially doubling capacity by decadeâs end at $27-44 billion per facility. Forecasts project 50 billion cubic feet per day demand growth from power and exports, complicating prioritization between domestic AI and international shipments. Recent policy changes, including eased LNG permitting and rising power demand, signal the end of unlimited cheap gas, with higher prices and volatility expected. Industry reports indicate that infrastructure expansions, such as new pipelines, could help scale production to accommodate both sectors without severe shortages.
