Telegram CEO Arrested for not Moderating Content

Recent developments in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump have raised questions about the motives and connections of the alleged assassin, Crooks. Contrary to earlier FBI statements, it has been revealed that Crooks had three encrypted messaging accounts in different countries. This discrepancy has led to criticism from a congressman who accused the FBI and Secret Service of not releasing information promptly, suggesting that threats against Trump are ongoing. In response to these threats, Trump has increased his security measures, including speaking at outdoor events behind bulletproof glass. The situation has led to calls for greater transparency and accountability in federal agencies.

Speaking of encrypted messaging, Pavel Durov, the billionaire co-founder and CEO of Telegram, was arrested at Bourget airport near Paris on a French search warrant. Durov is accused of facilitating crimes such as terrorism, narcotics trafficking, and fraud through his platform. Telegram, known for its end-to-end encrypted messaging, has faced criticism for not moderating illegal activities. Some, including Kim Dotcom, have characterized the arrest as a crackdown on free speech, suggesting that Western intelligence services want access to Telegram’s private messages. Durov, who left Russia in 2014 after refusing to shut down opposition communities on his VK social media platform, now resides in Dubai and holds dual citizenship in France and the UAE. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, and the Russian embassy in France is working to clarify the situation.

Running one of these “social media companies” (how, exactly do they make a living?) requires a serious ideological commitment. Why have a named CEO in the first place? Perhaps as a figurehead, an actor - but a syndicate hidden behind layers of obfuscation and tied to a political party and/or religious cult would likely be the best method of organizing a “social media company” dedicated to actual, literal, Free Speech ™.

Of all the examples that come to mind, ThePirateBay.org stands out, as does Gab.com. I believe that ThePirateBay is, perhaps, an organ of global commerce somehow and its existence benefits larger interests than the merchants of entertainment and software who pushed for its destruction. Gab is run by a devout Christian and American nationalist who has worked against heavy extra-legal suppression to become relatively sovereign in his company’s operation.

Before Telegram, there was WorldStarHipHop and LiveLeak, before that gore sites like Rotten.com and others. Once these sites stray into politically or geostrategically contentious information distribution the suppression and dirty tricks get pulled out against anyone operating the site.

Have you noticed the celebration of Burmese dissidents in the Golden Triangle using 3D printed homemade guns to attack government forces? What a shock that as the Afghanistan heroin trade has likely stopped with the withdrawal of US and UK troops that the old Golden Triangle pops up again. Snuff videos from Burmese guerilla combat are not subject to the same censorious action that Hezbollah “red arrow” videos of attacks on Israeli soldiers and equipment have. It isn’t a surprise, but it is disappointing.
