Emails from 2021, released under the Freedom of Information Act, show Dr. Anthony Fauci describing an Israeli study of nearly 800,000 people as “rather impressive” and noting that prior COVID-19 infection provided stronger protection against reinfection than two doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Fauci speculated that serious infections might yield immunity surpassing that from vaccination. NIH Director Francis Collins described the findings as “somewhat puzzling” and questioned CDC meta-analyses comparing natural and vaccine-induced immunity, despite public statements favoring vaccines. Officials weighed the data against a smaller CDC study but expressed concerns over complicating messaging for vaccine mandates.
Meanwhile, a preprint study published December 23, 2025, analyzing Louisiana data, reported statistically higher mortality in three-month-old infants vaccinated in their second month compared to unvaccinated peers, with greater effects among Black children and females due to immune response differences. The paper was retracted by preprints.org without explanation days later, despite widespread access and social media attention. Critics have reportedly pointed to methodological flaws in the analysis.
In other news, the Texas Department of State Health Services conducted aerial drops of RABORAL V-RG oral rabies vaccine baits over 19 counties along the Texas-Mexico border, including urban areas near El Paso, to vaccinate wildlife against rabies variants. The $2 million program, funded by state and federal sources, distributed 693,600 baits via six to nine daily flights at 500-1,000 feet, plus hand distribution. The baits contain a live genetically modified virus in fish oil-coated packets. CDC warnings advise avoiding contact and washing exposed areas, noting that dogs may experience stomach upset. Studies indicate the virus replicates in animals, sheds for weeks, transmits horizontally, and has infected humans, persisting in secretions up to 34 days post-ingestion. Tetracycline in the baits serves as a biomarker but poses ecotoxicity risks. No public notice or consent was provided for potential exposures, which officials describe as a safe and effective program with no reported human infections from proper use.
US Politics
The FBI has issued grand jury subpoenas to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her, Ramsey County Attorney John Choi, and Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty, as part of an investigation into allegations of conspiracy to obstruct ICE deportation operations. Walz had previously called for resistance to federal agents and threatened to deploy the Minnesota National Guard. During a press briefing, President Trump displayed mugshots of criminal undocumented immigrants reportedly protected by these officials, which Walz has described as a politicized attack on states’ rights.
Meanwhile, Democrats in Virginia, who now control the legislature and governor’s office, have introduced bills that include a 4.3% sales tax on deliveries from services like Uber Eats and Amazon, new sales taxes on business admissions, higher income tax brackets of 8% and 10% for incomes over $600,000 and $1 million respectively, a 3.8% investment tax, raised hotel taxes, and a personal property tax on landscaping equipment. Other proposed measures include banning gas-powered leaf blowers, guaranteeing free education for undocumented immigrants, prohibiting approaches at abortion clinics, extending absentee ballot receipt to three days post-election, allowing electronic voting, expanding ranked-choice voting, extending ballot curing to one week, redacting candidate addresses from public records, joining the National Popular Vote Compact, banning hand-counted ballots, imposing an 11% sales tax on firearms and ammunition, prohibiting outdoor shooting on land under five acres, lowering robbery penalties, barring arrests of undocumented immigrants in courthouses, removing mandatory minimum sentences, permitting speed cameras, and replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Additional proposals include bans on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines. Critics have described these proposals as burdensome tax hikes and erosions of rights, while supporters view them as advancements in equity and safety.
Turning to public education, recent Labor Department filings show the National Education Association (teacher’s union) directed $300,000 to the Sixteen Thirty Fund and additional funds to the Tides Foundation, along with $3.5 million to Education International, where NEA President Becky Pringle serves as vice president. The union also allocated $500,000 each to campaigns against standardized testing in Massachusetts and gerrymandering in Ohio, plus support for racial and education justice initiatives. The NEA has described such contributions as advancing global teacher solidarity and equity in education.
Also making headlines, two kindergarten teachers at Propel Schools in Pittsburgh posted a video on social media in which they crossed their fingers and expressed approval of Iranian assassination threats against President Trump, as shown on a phone screen with the headline “This time, it will not miss the target.” The teachers, Katie Patterson and Devin Hays, were placed on administrative leave after the video circulated. Propel Schools launched an investigation and later confirmed their dismissal, stating stated that suggestions of harm or violence contradict the organization’s values of professionalism, safety, and respect.
Lastly, a Kansas elementary school is the subject of a civil rights complaint after guidance counselor Kacey Countryman reportedly instructed sixth-graders during a “Find Your Voice” assignment not to name conservative figures or religious icons as role models. According to student reports, selecting Charlie Kirk or President Donald Trump led Countryman to refuse listing them on the board and state they were unsuitable. A student who chose Jesus reportedly faced similar rejection, with Countryman excluding political and religious topics. The American Center for Law and Justice filed the complaint against Marshall Elementary School in Eureka, alleging religious discrimination, viewpoint discrimination, free speech violations, and retaliation. The incident occurred in October and came to light after students were instructed not to inform parents.
Economy, Geopolitics, and the Great Taking
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink called for tokenization and digitization of assets on a single blockchain to reduce fees, enhance democratization, and curb corruption. He noted that Brazil and India are leading in currency digitization and suggested a common blockchain could enable seamless movement between tokenized money market funds, equities, and bonds, improving security and processing, while critics have expressed concerns over potential privacy erosion from centralization. Other critics have also warned that tokenization of financial assets could facilitate execution of the Great Taking.

Speaking of taking assets, Norway has issued 13,500 preparatory requisition notices to citizens for potential wartime seizure of homes, vehicles, boats, machinery, and other assets to support defense needs. Military logistics head Jørn Berg cited the most serious security situation since World War II, amid increased Russian activity near Norway’s Arctic border. The notices, valid for one year, prepare for crises including NATO surveillance in the Arctic, where Russia and China are expanding their presence. This occurs amid US-Europe tensions over President Trump’s plans to annex Greenland, which he linked to Arctic security against Russia and China. Officials have described this as routine preparedness measures with no immediate peacetime effects.
Relatedly, Danish pension fund AkademikerPension sold $100 million in US Treasuries, citing concerns over US government finances and rising credit risk, with geopolitical tensions including disputes over Greenland contributing to the decision. Foreign investors hold about $8-9 trillion in US debt, with European NATO countries accounting for around $2.8 trillion, though US officials have downplayed its impact on the broader Treasury market.
Australian Politics
Australia’s Parliament passed two sets of laws — firearms and customs laws as well as criminal migration laws — as part of the Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026.
First, the Firearms and Customs Laws portion of the bill establishes a national gun buyback scheme, stricter background checks including domestic violence history, restrictions on firearm sales, and offenses for accessing online firearm information. The legislation responds to the Bondi Beach attack, in which the attackers’ family held licensed firearms despite prior intelligence concerns. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the reforms target illegal weapons without affecting lawful owners such as farmers and shooters. The opposition Liberal-National Coalition opposed the bill, arguing it diverts attention from failures in immigration enforcement.
Second, the Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism portion of the bill creates a federal offense for publicly promoting or inciting racial hatred through speech, symbols, gestures, or online communication that would reasonably cause intimidation, harassment, or fear of violence based on race, color, or ethnic origin. Penalties include up to five years’ imprisonment, with higher penalties for aggravated cases involving religious officials or child radicalization. A defense applies to quoting religious texts for teaching purposes. Amendments narrowed the scope to anti-Semitism and Islamic extremism, requiring consultation with the opposition on extremist listings. Independent MPs expressed concerns over the removal of anti-vilification provisions and the rushed legislative process.
Privacy & Surveillance
Ireland plans to mandate a state-controlled digital wallet app for age verification to access social media and adult websites, holding identifiers like Public Services Cards and driver’s licenses. Communications Minister Patrick O’Donovan stated the measure addresses children viewing inappropriate content, with non-users potentially losing platform access. A pilot is scheduled for later this year, with possible fines for non-compliant companies. Finance Minister Simon Harris suggested it could help identify online trolls. However, government departments reported 31 data breaches in the Department of Defence and 123 in Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2025, part of nearly 6,900 incidents from 2014-2024, mostly due to internal errors. Unlike Australia’s third-party model, Ireland’s approach relies solely on state verification despite advocacy groups raising concerns over privacy risks given the state’s history of data breaches.
Energy
Saudi Aramco projects $3 billion to $5 billion in value from AI and advanced technologies in 2025, following $6 billion realized from 2023 to 2024. The company uses AI to reduce drilling costs, enhance well productivity, and lower maintenance expenses, with production costs at $3.50 per barrel. Aramco has deployed over 200 AI solutions from 442 identified use cases and developed an industrial large language model using 90 years of proprietary data plus billions of daily data points. CEO Amin Nasser stated that high data quality is essential for AI adoption in the energy sector, though some reports question the long-term sustainability amid geopolitical tensions.
