Geopolitics & Energy

President Trump ordered a US Navy blockade starting April 13 at 10 a.m. ET, targeting vessels entering or exiting Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, while affirming freedom of navigation for non-Iranian traffic through the strait. Trump warned of interdicting toll-paying ships in international waters, destroying mines, and potential limited strikes on high-value assets, stating Iran would not profit from extortion and that the military was “locked and loaded.” However, CENTCOM described the action as a port blockade to cut Iranian exports without a full strait siege. Brent crude rose 7.5% to $102 per barrel, and S&P 500 futures fell 1%. Iran stated it would not allow the blockade, with regional diplomacy considering further talks.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reportedly threatened to invade Israel “just as we entered Libya and Karabakh,” claiming only Pakistan’s mediation in US-Iran talks prevented action. This statement came on the day those talks failed and the Hormuz blockade was announced. The US has not yet issued an official response.

Lastly, two empty supertankers turned around at the Hormuz entrance after the talks’ failure, while others reportedly rushed to load US oil exports of 5 million barrels daily. However, replacing Middle East crude to Asia would require twice the current tanker fleet, as a 21-day Gulf trip extends to over 50 days from the US at laden speeds of 14-17 mph. Such a fleet expansion would reportedly take 3-5 years. UAE Oil Chief Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber called Iran’s strait restrictions a global threat to energy, food, and health security.

European Politics

Results in Hungarian parliamentary elections projected Fidesz, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, at 62 seats in the 199-seat National Assembly, down from 135 in 2022, with the opposition Tisza Party, led by Péter Magyar, nearing 128 seats amid 77.8% turnout. Orbán conceded defeat. The results reportedly reflect support from urban, youth, and middle-class voters and could end Fidesz’s 16-year rule, potentially unlocking over €20 billion in frozen EU funds and affecting Hungary’s positions on Ukraine aid and Russia sanctions. Commentators suggest the change in control will likely lead to the release of aid to Ukraine and a less friendly stance on Russian sanctions and energy deals.

The Irish government announced a €775 million fuel relief package amid protests by drivers, farmers, and hauliers over diesel and petrol prices, which have risen in connection with Middle East tensions. The package includes excise duty reductions of 32 cents per litre on diesel, 27 cents on petrol (gasoline), and 7.4 cents on marked gas oil or green diesel, effective from midnight on April 15, 2026, until July 31, as well as a deferral of a planned carbon tax increase. It also includes a €505 million intervention with a Road Transporters Support Scheme offering graduated direct payments to haulage and coach operators, backdated to March 2026 and conditional on diesel prices exceeding €1.90 per litre, estimated at €40 million monthly. A €100 million fuel subsidy scheme targets farmers, agricultural contractors, and fishers, offering about 20 cents per litre based on 2025 usage for March through July, with €20 million monthly for farming and €5 million for fishers and others.

The Irish protests have blocked roads, including the N1 near Dundalk, the M50, the M7, O’Connell Street in Dublin, Galway port, and others, causing fuel shortages at hundreds of stations. Police have cleared some sites, including at Whitegate Refinery, using mounted units and pepper spray. Taoiseach Micheál Martin described the blockades as undemocratic. Sinn Féin plans to introduce a no-confidence motion. Conor McGregor, MMA fighter and former presidential candidate, called for a nationwide shutdown, urging workers, farmers, and businesses to halt operations in protest against high energy costs and government policies. Protesters and critics reportedly dismissed the package as tokenistic and insufficient to address root causes.

Artificial Intelligence

Explosive Media, a small team producing Lego-style AI-generated videos, has created clips viewed hundreds of millions of times that reportedly promote pro-Iranian messages during the US-Iran war. The videos depict dying children, fighter jets, Donald Trump amid Epstein files, and George Floyd, portraying Iran as resisting US oppression. They include reportedly factual inaccuracies (according to US authorities), such as claiming the capture of a US pilot who was later rescued. However, the creator of the videos – going by the name “Mr. Explosive” – questioned those facts, claiming that “only 13% of what Mr. Trump says is based on facts.” Mr. Explosive confirmed the Iranian regime as a customer and described the Lego aesthetic as a “world language” shared by Iranian and Russian state media on X. Experts have called the content sophisticated “slopaganda,” enabling direct communication with Western audiences via AI trained on Western data, which they characterized as defensive memetic warfare amid Iran’s internet shutdowns and platform takedowns. US-aligned accounts have countered with parody Lego-style videos.

Health

A Finnish study published in Acta Paediatrica analyzed 2,083 individuals under 23 who contacted specialized gender identity services from 1996-2019. It found higher psychiatric morbidity compared to controls, with 45.7% having mental health issues pre-referral versus 15% in controls, rising to 61.7% two years post-referral versus 14.6%. Among those who underwent medical gender reassignment, psychiatric treatment needs reportedly increased, including higher rates of suicide, depression, and eating disorders. Adolescents who opted out of hormonal or surgical treatments showed better mental health outcomes, according to the study. Referrals rose over the period, with males seeking female transition increasing from 9.8% to 60.7% and females to male from 21.6% to 54.5%. Critics suggested increased post-referral psychiatric contacts may reflect mandatory evaluations rather than deterioration.

One of the best summations (3:30min) i’ve heard in a long time comes from Prof Jiang Xuegin. He said: “The United States used to be the policeman of the world and now it has become the pirate of the world”.
