What Happens When When Fake Oil Prices Meet Reality? Hard Times

Originally published at: https://peakprosperity.com/what-happens-when-when-fake-oil-prices-meet-reality-hard-times/

One poignant moment during my recent interview with Tucker Carlson was his coming to the realization that markets aren’t what he thought they were. Instead of being transparent places where willing buyers and sellers engage in price discovery, they are instead “fake.” His word, not mine. Well, also mine, but I didn’t supply it to him.

And indeed, they are. Maybe not 100% of the time, but often enough to dismantle the idea that they are accurately telegraphing useful price signals upon which we all depend.

I told him about the overnight shenanigans that have long plagued the silver market had begun to show up in oil too. The overnight markets typically have very low volume. This is true for all commodities. So it’s always a bit of a red flag when there’s suddenly a huge spike of selling compressed into a small window of time.

To provide a very recent example, we’re going to take a close look at the early morning hours of 7/24/26 (this morning in terms of this report).

Early in the morning, at precisely 4:29 am, a whopping 5,120 oil contracts representing 5,120,000 barrels of oil ‘traded’ during a single one-minute ‘tick.’ The prior average number of contracts trading per 1-min tick was ~150 contracts.

I put ‘traded’ in quote marks because this isn’t how legitimate price discovery happens. Trading implies a legitimately functioning market. Instead, this is how price setting happens. In this instance, a spike of volume 34x the prior average suddenly hit the tape.

If you were a legitimate producer wishing to hedge your future production by selling oil futures, you wouldn’t suddenly dump them all into a single one-minute window because, frankly, that would be retarded. You’d get the worst possible pricing result out of that.

What is the point of someone selling so much paper oil in a minute-long dump? To lower the price, obviously. Such a power move is designed not to discover a true market-clearing price, but to smash through that point of equilibrium and set a new, lower price.

Note in the chart above that once that burst of activity had taken place at 4:29 am, the trend was set, and much larger downward jogs could be accomplished on much lower volume.

That’s because the other market participants, algos and humans alike, know as well as I do how to interpret that massive paper dump. Everyone, carbon or silicon-based, either steps out of the way or piles on by doing their own selling. The manipulation consists of a good, swift kick down the stairs, which gets the process started. The question is, who is behind that? Who is doing that kicking?

The way I suspect this happens is that a trading house or firm, possibly with government backing (meaning funding and a waiver of wash trading rules), trades with itself (and/or a conspiring firm) by both selling contracts and snapping them up at lower and lower prices on the other side.

This way, they are not at risk of having to settle up with real oil in the future. I don’t know for certain this is happening, but it’s how I would do it if I were them.

The Problem With Manipulating the Oil Price

I completely understand the political pressures and egos involved that could make compelling cases for smashing the price of oil lower. But they really should not be doing it, nonetheless.

The most powerful and simple of economic charts is the “P-Q” chart. It shows the relationship between price, supply, and demand to discover the true market-clearing price for an item.

If you alter that relationship by artificially holding the price too low, the effect will be to cause demand to be too high relative to supply. In the case of oil, if the price were being held too low relative to new supply, we’d predict that we’d see falling inventories. And that is exactly what we see:

The x-axis is in weeks of the year, and ever since the start of the Iran War, US inventories of crude oil have been plunging.

That’s also true for gasoline and ‘distillate’ which consists of diesel, heating oil, and jet fuel.

My conclusion is that someday in the not-too-distant future, inventory panic will set in, prices will explode higher, and that will cause a severe economic shock. At that point, we’ll all be sorry that the oil price manipulators did what they did. But they’ll almost certainly have moved on to creating some other set of problems by then.

The only solution is completely open and transparent markets, where we can see who is doing the trading and where speculative limits are set so that those participants cannot ever be more than a minor percentage of the overall activity for vital commodities such as crude.

Doc you are cranking out the product!
I found you in 2008 after reading The Hirsch Report, you were almost a lone voice in the wilderness. You have become one of the leading voices of Peak Oil and it has been a fun ride watching you.
I am so grateful to have had 17 years to prepare, along the way my wife and I have had a blast living closer to nature and growing our own food.
I got to meet you at Front Site and you gave me your left over ammo for my wife’s 9mm.
Thank you so much for your clear insight. Looks like an event horizon!

How have the changes in crude inventory changed relative to total refining capacity? If the latter has gone down in equal or greater measure, wouldn’t that also lower the price of crude?

Even if demand for oil derived products remain stable, if a ton of refineries are compromised, their input, aka the demand for crude, goes down too.

Apparently, in the big Military paradigm that they seem to teach in the War Colleges, “Shaping Operations” are used to create Certainty under conditions of “Uncertainty”, which makes sense. (See “Military Statecrat and the Rise of Shaping in World Politics”.)

But, if we work backwards, then under what conditions would you use “Shaping Operations” to create Uncertainty out of Certainty to hopelessly “Muddy the Waters” and to confuse-the-Hell out of and to “Brain-F…ck the dipshit People? Reverend Jones would deliberately Scare-the-Crap and Confuse this Cult congregation in Jonestown in order to keep them disoriented and disorganized and dependent upon Reverend Jones who they called “Fatber”. You gotta love Cults. The U.S. now is mostly an amalgamation of disorganized confused, frightened “Cults”?

It seems that now “They” are trying to create Uncertainty with all of the ubiquitous Propaganda and the “Misinformation” and “Disinformation”.

During the recent excellent Podcast of that “Coffee and a Mike” dude (Mike Ferris?) with the great Dave Collum and that retired CIA dude, they seemed to largely agree that they can’t be certain of anything now, including whether the Iran War is even “Real” and whether the Strait of Hormuz is really closed?

“They” have got us By-the-Balls?

Would you advise a distraught young Bloke about to graduate from college shouldering a huge stone of college Debt like Sisyphus to become a “Pimp”, like Jeffrey Epstein?

But, what if the young Bloke is not an “Extrovert” like Epstein with his own private jet dubbed “The Lolita Express”? Epstein was definitely not a Self-Made Man who pulled himself up by his bootstraps in the hardscrabble American immigrant tradition.

Adaptations to the coming enery shortage life. I seek to do what I can do with what I have. One of my needs is to settle in to a location near my children and grandchildren where I can put down some roots and start serious gardening.

In the Santa Cruz County foothills, my oldest daughter had a 3 acre (very hilly) lot with a space in the back for me. So far I have only a trailer on the lot. Not bad. But doesn’t feel permanentl.

I had lunch with Rich Cabot, PP member, and Ph.D. in electrical engineering who designs software to clean up acoutical signals for recording studios and public arenas. He confided that EVERYTHING is physically built in China. Designed in the US, then sent to China to be physically built. The Chinese workers earn about $4/hr. And they are efficient.

He recommended a folding house, made in china, shipped to the USA in a single shipping container. he sent me some examples. videos. I am looking into several designs and manufacturers.

So far, my favorite is the “Unfolding House” (model “Ori”).

You can see the video here. https://unfoldhouse.com/

It is very cool. I will see if I can get it without the furniture and with a loft for the bed. Not clear if that will actually happen.

Delivered in a single shipping container through the closest port, which will be Oakland, CA.

About $80K with delivery and tariffs. Hoping to get it cheaper.

Watch the 3 minute video. (on the website, but I can’t post it here)

“We can compact a 482-square-foot house into a 40 foot shipping container.” See the first 4 minutes of this video.

The most important feature is that the toilet has a bidet. This might be VERY important if toilet paper becomes scarce. Ha ha.

What would happen if you rented a big billboard sign along the highway in Cult USA and every week you posted some big Message that “Offended” the particular “Belief System” of one or more local Cults?

For example, “Because of the Net Energy Predicament and Entropy, America will never be Great Again”? Or, “American Food and American Public Education are Bad for You”? Or, “Helen of Troy was not from Sub-Sahara Africa”? Or, “People who Watch TV Suck! Or, the Public Sucks!”

America has become a highly socially-atomized society, which is a feature of Totalitarianism?

Micheal Yon (Sobek) posits that it’s possible to have a Cult of one person. He may be right?

Everyone now is hopelessly Confused and organized in disparate Cults….

“Put on PsyWar Op…Make it LOUD. Romeo Foxtrot shall we dance.”

This not a good time to be doing that stuff because the citizenry not only in the US but around the world are beginning to sense that those in charge are blowing the proverbial smoke up our asses.

The public overwhelming disapproves of the Iran war. They blame Trump, Netanyahu and Israel for the unfolding global clusterf***.

Daniel Davis played a short clip to Prof Glenn Diesen where Marco “Narco” Rubio toll a congressional committee that the US takes sides in the Ukraine war with Russia. They provide them weapons, funding and intelligence. Then Davis played a clip where Trump says the US doesn’t give any weapons to Ukraine, adding, he doesn’t know where they get them from. Our fine government at work. The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. /s.

When the global economy goes tits up and hunger/famine hits, it doesn’t take a genius to predict massive civil unrest, governments will be overthrown by their people, and possibly some dead officials along the way.

My favorite quote is from Gerald Celente: “when people lose everything and have nothing else to lose, THEY LOSE IT!”

Only yesterday there were a few ‘articles’ released on this in Australia.

I think comparatively to other countries, we have a lot of people that are looking at alternatives to our housing bubble.

https://x.com/i/status/2080463696103608384

Very in vogue now to buy a caravan/tiny home on a random plot of land hours from the nearest town of more than a few thousand, and set up to be self sufficient and work remote.

For us it’s something we’re considering as a back up for our children to have comfortable grounded lives on our property if even buying land becomes unobtainium.

I hope the concept of an 18.5 year housing cycle is real, our property value has increased from just over 1.1m to 1.9m in 3 years. It’s outrageous, especially when considering land valuations impact our yearly council rates. Only bonus is we have more equity to burn through before banks can start asking for a rebalanced LVR to below 100%.

(In the Townsville bubble a decade ago, a lot of people lost their investment properties and homes as the market was revalued much lower in a very short period of time, on the back end we bought very cheap and were lucky to sell into a ‘booming’ military growth area) -the lesson is all markets are volitile, even hard assets. It’s just a lesson most young people have never experienced.

Already happened—- It’s gets bought and replaced with more appropriate narrative

Instead of a loft you might make yourself feel right at home with something like this curtain ,

Is the Price and Market Manipulation pathology also a symptom of Mind Control?

One bloke on this website said “no” because the market speculators are only influenced by “Money”. But, that can’t be right since Money itself is a kind of “Cult”? People in the Money Cult literally gauge Self-Worth by “Net Worth”, right? (Do you remember the City Councilman who wanted to charge Homeless Blokes $5 bucks a night to stay in a homeless shelter? That’s Cult thinking?)

What about the Politicians voting for Section 219? Are they in a “Cult”?

What about the various Death Cults?

The Canadians seem to be now a Euthanasia Cult, which is very creepy?

The Canadian Relationship- Guru, Rich Cooper, is always exhorting Blokes to give manifold different “Tests” to women that they are dating, and if the women fail any of the Tests, then Rich exhorts the Men to “Deep Six” their girlfriends. “Deep Six” means to euthanize them, right?

A Canadian husband is sounding the alarm after the country’s government-run healthcare system tried to euthanize his wife instead of saving her life, forcing the couple to flee to the United States, where she received treatment that has since put her cancer into remission multiple times.”

On a completely unrelated topic, I wonder how the magic money machines are doing and who’s doing printing, say around 4:30 am EST to buy a lot of something in a fake and gay paper market? It’s as big a mystery as the giant spikes in serious health conditions and deaths occurring starting in 2021. What could possibly cause that double digit sigma event?

I keep looking for a compilation cut from The Big Short where every character in some way is saying “Why can’t the rest of the financial world see what is happening? Don’t they know that this is going to blow up?” But we’re watching it Yet Again in real time wrt oil markets. And yes, here at PP we’re all forewarned and forearmed (both figuratively and literally), but it still hurts to see your civilization heading towards an energy cliff full-tilt while the administration and the mainstream news proclaims “peace is at hand!” and “moar and harder air strikes!” on alternating days. All the while, reality is being ignored, with consequences incoming but at a somewhat uncertain date.

Ha ha ha ha. And instead of a toilet with bidet, a bedpan!

I was thinking more along the lines of a Murphy bed that could look part of the design, but stored away during the day. Something like this..

From an older woman’s perspective, a loft means having to go up and down a ladder during the night to visit the bathroom. No bueno!
