There’s an old maxim: “History doesn’t repeat, it rhymes.” I think what Mr. Schmactenberger said is that we’ve now reached a point, especially with respect to the power of technology, where even just rhyming with the past will destroy us as a species. Do humans have the wherewithal to jump the canyon between rhyming and something completely and radically different? Personally, I’m not holding my breath.

I think he discredits his message with the claim that we wiped out 100M indigenous population in the United States. Most credible estimates place the native population at between 2 and 7 million by around 1700 AD.
