By the way, with a paper ballot and paper list of voters, one for the check-in table & one for the check-out table, if I want to submit a later ballot, claiming to be Chris, they can see a “Chris” came in to vote or voted absentee and that the second vote will not count until it can be validated. It slows down the effort to cheat.
Conscience or what you state as “self awareness”; according to the Bible is a “byproduct” of being created in the image of God. AI can’t have “conscience” unless it’s programed to have so by a human agent. It’s like unto as smart as our computers may ever becomes they are not and never will be life forms.
Then “free will” theologically speaking is not the same thing as what I’d call “independent volition”. Independent volition is the ability to make choices outside of the will and/or desires of any other entity in the universe (God included).
But “free will” in the Biblically theological sense is the ability to make choices outside of the influence of one’s own sin and fallen nature. Thus the only person who ever really had “free will” was Jesus Christ. Who had no fallen nature and had no sin; because he was God incarnate.
Or at least that is the conclusion if you believe Christianity.

I highly recommend uBlock Origin to get rid of ads on websites and even Youtube if your browser is Edge/Chrome/Firefox. There are several other browsers that can incorporate it as an add-on.

All computer programs are fundamentally insecure. It is intrinsic to the nature of the hardware and I have heard it is fundamentally impossible to guarantee the security. So no software – running on computer hardware – can ever be 100% free of the threat of a bug (or a hack which is an exploit of another bug).
Therefore you need a non-digital solution, such a paper ballot – which leaves an audit trail. The ideal paper ballot system would somehow allow voters to audit that their votes were counted exactly as they were cast. I’m not the person to design this, but I can easily imagine how it could be done, using some sort of hash algorithm tying a particular ballot stub, kept by the voter, back to the ballot.
