Monero, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency, rose above $500 for the first time since 2021, gaining over 20% in a week, while rival Zcash fell more than 20% following the mass resignation of its development team over reported governance disputes. Institutional reports from firms like Grayscale and Coinbase highlighted growing demand for privacy coins in regulated environments, though analysts note risks of a deeper correction if Monero fails to break key resistance levels. A recent report by Charts and Parts suggests the precious metals markets are experiencing an unprecedented global FOMO (fear of missing out), with diverse buyer groups—retail investors, industrial users, high-net-worth individuals, sovereign wealth funds, and central banks—converging simultaneously on gold and silver as a hedge against inflation and declining fiat trust. Unlike typical localized rallies, this broad, multi-country reallocation is reportedly hitting small markets with extreme paper-to-physical leverage (often over 100:1), long used for price containment via futures. As inflation rewires psychology toward physical delivery over paper claims—something that cannot be printed—the system faces rising strain, heightening the risk of supply constraints, potential ruptures, and sharp repricing when demand overwhelms available metal. Charts and Parts says this marks a structural shift rather than a cyclical upswing.

Energy

President Trump warned Cuba to negotiate with the United States, stating that Venezuela would no longer provide oil or financial support following the U.S. capture of Nicolás Maduro on January 3, 2026, and the redirection of Venezuelan oil shipments to the U.S. Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel responded by stating readiness to defend the nation, as the island faces economic strain from lost Venezuelan supplies, which reportedly covered about 25% of its energy needs, alongside ongoing blackouts and sanctions. Cuban officials have indicated potential reliance on alternative suppliers like Russia and Mexico.

Also in a follow-up to the Maduro raid, President Trump declared a national emergency via executive order, blocking U.S. courts and creditors from accessing Venezuelan oil revenue held in Treasury accounts, which he said would advance foreign policy goals and prevent influence by actors like Iran and Hezbollah. The measure reportedly supports U.S. companies’ planned $100 billion investment in Venezuelan oil production, though executives noted challenges without sector reforms, while interim Venezuelan leader Delcy Rodríguez expressed openness to cooperative projects but condemned the order as an attempt to seize national resources.

Geopolitics

Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be holding discussions with Danish and Greenland officials regarding President Trump’s expressed interest in acquiring Greenland for the United States, in what officials described as active diplomatic engagement on the territory’s future.

US Politics

Prominent Democrats, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York Attorney General Letitia James, Governor Kathy Hochul, and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, issued statements condemning what they described as antisemitic actions, including protests in Jewish neighborhoods supporting Hamas. The statements followed a January 9 protest in Queens, New York, where activists chanted “we support Hamas” outside a synagogue, with some sources viewing the response as a genuine reaction to rising antisemitism amid Gaza tensions. Observers described the coordinated messaging as a shift from the Democrats’ previous positions on related issues, noting the timing amid ongoing tensions.

Health

Utah implemented a regulatory sandbox program allowing AI systems to handle prescription refills for chronic conditions, suspending licensure requirements and limiting penalties to encourage innovation in healthcare. Officials stated that the initiative seeks to improve patient care and reduce costs by enabling AI to approve or decline refills autonomously, bypassing physicians, amid discussions on AI reliability in clinical decisions, with critics raising concerns about liability and algorithmic errors in the absence of human oversight

A peer-reviewed paper in Oncotarget, published January 3, 2026 and mentioned in yesterday’s Daily Digest, reported over 300 cases across 27 countries that authors linked to new or aggressive cancers following COVID-19 vaccines, attracting global attention despite a reported cyberattack on the journal’s site. Dr. Wafik El-Deiry, a co-author of the paper who has criticized vaccine safety signals, has publicly rejected a recruitment offer from Pfizer, reportedly received days after the publication, which he described as ironic in timing. Relatedly, oncology drugs accounted for nearly one-fifth of global pharmaceutical sales in 2025, generating over $217 billion, led by treatments like Merck’s Keytruda, which earned almost $30 billion.

Privacy & Surveillance

Cloudflare faced a $17 million fine from Italian authorities for refusing to comply with the “Piracy Shield” system, which requires rapid blocking of websites suspected of illegal streaming without judicial review and involves collaboration between regulators and media firms like Serie A and Sky Italia. The U.S.-based company plans to challenge the penalty legally and seek support from Washington, potentially withdrawing services from Italy, including cybersecurity for the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Italian authorities defend the system as necessary to combat piracy’s economic harm to the media industry.

European Politics

The UK Home Office-funded “Pathways” video game, developed for ages 11-18, simulates scenarios in which teens questioning mass migration or researching immigration statistics encounter warnings of extremism, leading to in-game referrals to the Prevent counter-terrorism program. The scenarios depict choices like blaming immigrants for job competition or engaging with anti-immigration protests as pathways to radicalization, with the program having diverted nearly 6,000 individuals from ideologies, including a rising share of right-wing referrals. Officials describe it as essential for teaching media literacy and preventing terrorism through education.

This could be a big development in the ongoing battle for dominance within the privacy coin space. Arguably, privacy coins represent the true original vision of Bitcoin - digital, private currency independent of the central banking system. It’s been interesting to see Monero fail to enter a bear trend given Bitcoin’s entry into one. To my knowledge, no altcoin has ever maintained a bull trend while Bitcoin was in a bear trend, although they do tend to lag in their change in direction. Are we witnessing some general increase in privacy coin market adoption plus a consolidation of existing market participants into fewer privacy coins? As always, time will tell!

Mamdani onboard with pro-Israel? Things are starting to make a little more sense now. I was waiting for his head on a platter.

Monero reportedly reached a price of $1,144 on the Chinese exchange HTX yesterday, significantly higher than other exchanges.

I’ve heard speculation this could be the result of a panic related to the $182 million frozen by Tether as reported in today’s Daily Digest:

As people realize their digital assets are not safe with “surveillance coins” like Tether and Bitcoin, one might expect we’ll see continued adoption of privacy coins.
